I am about to buy a Saiga AK-47 like the one shown below. I would like to remove the rifle stock and add a traditional AK-47 style stock and pistol grip. Can this easily be done? If so, what do I need and how much will I be spending on these mods?

There's everything you need to know about the conversion.

Thanks for the quick reply. That is a bit too much work for me since I don't have the tools or experience. I guess I might go with the Romanian version even though it is $100 bucks more....

Lightsped, I did mine last year. I was 18 years old with no real experience with gunsmithing whatsoever. I used a dremel, a pair of plyers, and a hammer.

If I can do it, you can do it. I bought a bullet guide from Dinzag over at Saiga-12 forums.

If your looking for an AK, you'll probably be happier with the "correct" Romanian over the "PC" Saiga with a half conversion.

The Romanians are really not all that bad, and shoot just as well, for the most part. The only thing you really need to watch with the WASR's is the mag fit. I've seen some that were tight and some with a lot of slop. Tight is better, as you can always open it up a little if you need to, to loose, is to loose. If your looking at one, compare a couple of rifles and try a couple of mags to see how they fit. If your not accustomed to them, they should rock in smoothly without binding. They all usually have a little wiggle. Some mags are better than others. (be aware that the release on any of them may be tight and hard to work when new. All of them, the Saigas included, usually need a little minor file work on the release to be easy and smooth. The release is a stamping and usually has sharp edges the need to be broken, or they tend to grab the mag )

I have both Romanian AK's (SAR and WASR) and a Krebs Saiga conversion. I shoot them all and like them all. The Saiga is the better made rifle, and even with its 14" barrel, the better shooter, but the others shoot pretty close to it. Its to bad the Saiga's cant be imported in their correct configuration, they would definitely be the cream of the AK crop. Krebs, or AK-USA are your next best thing for now.

Oh, one other thing. Dont get the "US" length stocks. They are to long and the rifle does not shoulder and shoot right. The AK's are not "short", and have the exact LOP as the M16/M16A1's and most other "combat" rifles.
