I'm leaning towards the Aimpoint CompM4, it looks like a clean & easy setup. I'm waiting until I pick up my gun to see what the M1A Loaded Coupon has to offer. From what I hear Ill use that to pick up extra mags... we'll see.

Back to the optics question, opinions are welcome but first hand experiences are encouraged.

Aimpoint rules in the battery life arena, the Eotech may be a little faster as far as target acquisition is concerned, but both are faster than conventional optics.

What type of shooting are you planning on doing??

I assume your asking about the Trijicon Reflex sight?? I have never used one.

Thanks CT, I won't be shooting further than 600 yards and 90% will be shots under 200 yards (or less).

I guess Ive already made up my mind unless Ive completely overlooked something brand new. I'm just excited at the prospects. The Trijicon Reflex would be my choice if I went with a Trijicon product. Another option might be TRUGLO.

I talked to a sales rep at Springfield that told me most scopes in their SOCOM II ads (the ones with the blue rings) are made by Valdada, when I talked to a sales rep at Valdada he admitted that, over time their scopes probably wouldn't hold up on a rifle like a SOCOM II.

I'm not trying to start a scope mfg. flame war, just passing along the info. they passed on to me.

It is hard to believe a Valdada would not hold up on a 308 cal rifle. A forward mount on your rifle limits what you can mount on it. The Millett Tactical DMS-1 Scope 30mm Tube 1-4x 24mm Illuminated Circle Dot Reticle would be excellent on that type of rifle if you can mount it over the receiver. The eye relief on 4x is about 3.5".

The DMS-1 would be excellent for CQ work on the 1x and for out to 200 - 300 yards you have the 4x.

Yeah... I thought it was an odd thing for a sales rep to say period. Magnification would be nice, especially variable. Ive got a Remington 700P .308 x Leupold Mark 4 3.5-10x40mm LR/T M1 Front Focal for long range. I want the SOCOM II for (as you said) CQ fun.

The price on the DMS is a plus. Ive got the full rail, what rings would your recommend?

The Burris XTR rings would work well and they are a good price.

If the battery power on the DMS-1 run out while in use it is still operable because it has a black circle dot reticle under the illuminated circle dot. I believe it is etched also.

I plan to buy one myself. The DMS-1 gets very good reviews all over the net and you can find pictures of some mounted.

Here is the link for the Burris XTR rings. The medium or low would probably be what you need depending on the hight of your rail mount.

The DMS-1 is always out of stock everywhere I check. Midway USA just got them in. They will probably sale out fast.

If you decide on the DMS-1 post a picture of it mounted and tell us what you think about it. Most have not heard of this new optic yet.

If you can afford it, I'd get the Aimpoint CompM4. Integrated base and 80,000 hour battery plus a 10 year warrantee (not that you'll ever need it). I'm waiting for a Non-NVD version that's a little cheaper. Barring that, I'm planning on a CompML3 for my scout rifle.

I like MAX's setup idea but I'm almost positive Ill go with the Aimpoint. I pick up the gun tomorrow. Ill post some pictures when I get it put together.

I have a Aimpoint ML2 and they are nice but for me it is very limited to targets out to 50 to 100 yards. One hundred yards is pushing it because the dot covers 4" at 100 yards. I had it mounted on an AR15 then a AK47 and I now have it mounted on a Mossberg SPX shotgun. It is mounted with a ARMS QR throw mount so I can chage back and forth between the GRS and the Aimpoint. I plan to get a DMS-1 soon for my AR15 so I am not limited to close in targets and I will post pictures of it mounted and give a short review.

Here is the Aimpoint mounted on the SPX.

Sweet shotgun! I will be using my SOCOM primarily for hunting coyote (I know, over kill), deer, sheep and anything else that moves. I hunt the high desert so if I am walking most of my shots will be under 200 yards, if I'm spotting Ill use my Remington. Keep in mind, I live in CA so I am very limited.

I don't think Ill put any optics on it until I break it in a little - who knows, maybe the iron sights will do the job.

Although... all that rail and no candy seems like such a waste.

On a side note: This forum is first rate. I haven't seen the usual forum 'attention whore' spam and the members seem friendly and knowledgeable. Good stuff!

Sorry for the double post. This is the entire XMAS 07 booty. Except I got one of those Leg Lamps (http://www.redriderleglamps.com/?gclid=CO7pu_LIx5ACFSbvYAodhGJ_UA) from FRAGILE.

It actually looks cooler w/o the bottom rail.

That is a very nice versatile compact rifle. I have seen one before but never held one. What a great Christmas.

One consideration with regard to optic selection on this particular rifle is height of the optic. I have a SA SOCOM and replaced the factory rail with an Ultimak unit. Even with this lowered rail, the Eotech was still too tall, requiring me to raise my head from the stock. Instead, I decided to go with an Aimpoint ML3 with a LaRue RAS II mount (lower ring). This lower configuration allows me to maintain a decent cheek weld while utilizing the Aimpoint. Just something to think about with regard to this weapon platform.

for the ranges that you are gonna be shooing i would say go with the acog or other small powered fixed scope, second would be the eotech as it is my favorite as far as red dot optics. the 1 moa dot makes it great for shooting accurate at extended ranges, moreso than the aimpoint.

if there is any possibility that you are gonna shoot cqb distances than i woul say go with the acog with the doctor optic on top.

Well, like I said - Ill figure it out after I get the iron sights zeroed in. Regarding the particular rifle's height of the optic, I bought a BlackHawk Rifle Cheek Rest Fixed (and a couple of 10 round mags) from MidwayUSA. The EOTech that I have seen didn't impresses me that much.

The one concern I have about traditional scopes is they don't seem to be as sturdy as Aimpoint or EOTech.

Has anyone heard any news about future products from Aimpoint. I know they are planning to focus on hunters and a more useful long range system but when will the public see these products?

EDIT: Happy New Year!
