Have you ended up carrying or owning the same style of handgun as your childhood mentors and tv/movie heroes did?
I grew up watching Quincy, Magnum PI, and The Rockford Files.Selleck had his illegally concealed 1911, Rockford had his illegal 38 snubnose, and quincy i dont recall having a gun.
Oddly I like revolvers better, and have one at home. Like the looks of the 1911, but not much interest in getting one unless its real cheap to get.

Didn't really have handgun-toting heroes. I watched the Rifleman, A-Team, Airwolf (think that's the name. Helicopter's one of the main stars, neat intro tune)... didn't notice the guns too much, except the rifles for Rifleman and A-Team, and the missiles and such on Airwolf. Though Magnum might've been part of the inspiration for getting my first handgun (1911)... though I researched the things a bit before buying.
I dunno. Maybe it was due to having a handgun-free household (my father's never cared for 'em, prefers long guns) that I didn't notice the pistols so much.
I still want that helicopter, though. :p

What did Joe Mannix carry?
... Rockford had his illegal 38 snubnose ... Wasn't Rockford a LICENSED Private Eye? I would assume that would qualify him for some sort of CCW back then. Yes? No?
Same for Magnum. Yes? No?

I can't recall any specific character, but I always wanted a 1911 because I saw a lot of movies and TV shows where folks carried one. Now I have three and just love the guns.
Same thing with Lever Action carbines and the M1 Carbine.
The Colt Python always appealed to me due to its appearance in TV and movies, but it never appealed to me as much as it costs. :(

Wasn't Rockford a LICENSED Private Eye? I would assume that would qualify him for some sort of CCW back then. Yes? No?IIRC, Rockford was an ex-con (maybe an ex-felon?). He got a lot of heat for carrying, but seemed to get out of getting arrested sometimes by working deals, giving up info.
Also, this was Kali. Not necessarily a carry friendly state.
I was never especially interested in blued steel .38 snubbies, but I always wanted an early 70s Firebird or Trans Am because of Jim Rockford. :p
This could possibly be the silliest poll on THR ever. Everything has to be serious? :scrutiny:

so this is sillier then the "what caliber for vampire/zombie/mutant from outer space" polls?
It hit me that all the people i know who watched and idolized the movies of the 80s, weapon, die hard, and the new will smith ones, all seem ot idolize the semi auto pistol. jJust curious if it was related to what you grew up watching or not.

Most of my TV heros carried the single action colt. No, I don't carry a single action Ruger, much less a colt, except while hunting or hiking, but not for CCW.
Kevin, ever see a Bond movie? PPK?

What kind of question is this??? I'm afraid I will not be able to carry the way my childhood hero did as Hopalong Casidy had a rather unique gun belt and holsters. [Must be gettin' old]

OK, I will play. I almost ignored this thread, but then realized that yes, one reason I like sixguns so much just may be from seeing Roy Rogers and John Wayne on TV as a child. I grew up in a non-firearm household, but by the time I was old enough to buy my own handguns in 1982, I was a confirmed autoloader believer, and my first pistol in 1983 was a 1911. I doubt Magnum P.I. played any role in that decision; it was mostly from reading Col. Jeff Cooper. As a rookie street cop, starting in 1984, the rules said 4" .357 DA revolver for duty, however, and no autos for duty or back-up for my first year of wearing the badge, so I made a concerted effort to become a highly skilled sixgunner as rapidly as possible. Revolver greats such as Bill Jordan and Jim Cirillo became my heroes. Today, I use both revolving and autoloading pistols, and would not want to give up either type, but prefer the sixgun.

3 of us rode horses to a one room school house between the ranches.
We played Hoppy, Roy Rogers, and Gene Autry.. It was sure nice when a fourth boy joined the group.. Being the youngest, he had to be the "injun"!!
This was during the Korean War.. We din't quite understand what that was about, but we each buried our guns in a dirt bank during the last recess, so that Stalin couldn't find them overnight!!

Alan, Joe Mannix carried a snubby, don't know the model. I just remember in the intro seeing him dive out of his Toronado convertible, roll on the pavement and nail a bad guy with one shot at some impressive distance.

You need one more choice: My hero carried a rifle! Chuck Conners carried a Winchester rifle in the Rifleman!
Encore Western has two episodes on each night (on Dish Network). I Tivo it and watch it when I can. I'm still jealous of Mark for having a gun totin' dad and he got to ride horses!
I carry either a Glock 36 or 27 (oh the horror, can't believe it hasn't blown my leg off yet), or a revolver of some sort S&W 36 or Mod 65, and sometimes a Kel-Tec P3AT

I lived in the sticks and we only got 2 channels on a TV we where not allowed to touch. I grew up with Superman, Batman, and Sgt. Rock comic books. My all time hero was the red headed professor in Sgt Rock who would shoot snipers out of trees while reading a book. I think he had a Thompson most of the time, so no.

Daniel Boone: I don't have a flintlock, don't think I have the patience to go through the loading process for each shot. But somehow I keep being drawn to a flint lock. Cap locks don't catch my intrest. If I get a muzzle loader it will be a flint lock.

Your poll doesn't give me an option. I loved old war movies most of all, and they had Thompsons. I coveted them mightily. My family was neutral / anti gun, so I didn't know much about them until I moved out. By then I wanted a snubbie, mostly because it was easy to conceal.

My Dad (our family name is Sanders) wouldn't let us watch COMBAT! Just because they spelled the guys last name with a "u" in it. Least ways that is what he told us. Now that I am old as he was then it was most likely due to the fact that us three boys were on the ragged edge with the violence anyway and didn't need anymore eggin on. :D

They had Colt SAAs in western holsters. Texas has no open carry laws. And, I think I got my appreciation for the sexy looks of the M1 Carbine from the Lieutenant on "Combat". :D Can't remember his name. I liked the Carbine better than Saunders' Thompson, though, for some reason. I think it was the stock. It looked like a normal rifle. :D
If we get open carry some day (fat chance), maybe I'll have a buscadero rig made up for the Blackhawk with a chess knight on it. :D

Actually Jack Bauer uses an HK USPc in 9mm not a P2000. Though I would carry the P2000 myself as it is a nicer gun in my opinion.

Lessee...I guess as a kid, my only gun-toting TV hero was "Sledge Hammer." Luckily I did/do NOT emulate him! :what: :p
Actually, with what little I had to choose from, I loved "MacGyver" as a kid. I'm just glad the anti-gun-ness of the actor and character didn't rub off on me!
Later on, in my teens, I discovered the James Bond films. My first autopistol was a Bersa Thunder .380, a reasonably priced "clone" of Bond's Walther PPK.
It's role as both a primary gun and a backup have pretty much been replaced by guns better suited to the roles (a G19 and a P3AT respectively), but I still have it, and don't intend to part with it.
As for mode of carry, I had my spell with a cheap shoulder rig for the Bersa a long time ago. But it wasn't that long ago that I got Ken Null to make me one of his SMZ inverted shoulder rigs for my Bersa. On a rare occasion I'll wear that combo as a primary, but the unique shoulder rig really helps the Bersa shine in the "deep cover" department. Just put the holster on and slip on a shirt (even a good quality, well fitting t-shirt will do), and you're good to go...

I haver NEVER used TV or movies as exemplars of how or what to do as regards self-protection, and have difficulty believing that any reasonable and mature person would do so.
I like movies and TV shows which employ firearms, but have never imagined that they represented anything to be emulated.

The OP asked the question:
Have you ended up carrying or owning the same style of handgun as your childhood mentors and tv/movie heroes did?
I don't believe the intent of the question was to indicate that you used a tv/movie hero as a source of information or inspiration to make your choice.
