Colorado Multigun's Steel Safari is designed to test a competitor's skills shooting rifle in practical "hunting-type" challenges in the natural terrain using what gear he can carry.

Shooters should expect:

* two day-long field stages each involving movement through approximately 3 miles of rugged desert terrain; each field stage will have approximately 10 shooting stations; each shooting station will have 6 target opportunities

* to locate, range, and engage targets at each station under a time limit

* to carry gear used during the courses of fire

* to engage rifle targets from 200 to 700 yards (few engagements outside this range may be required)

* Standard targets sizes are 6"x12" or 12"x12", but some vary.

* fantastic geographic features for a hike-and-shoot match

* an optional long-range side match with an emphasis on KYL ("know your limitations") and speed, for cash payback

* both an "unlimited" and a "light rifle" division.

The Steel Safari has been going on at the Blue Steel Ranch for quite a few years now, but with almost no publicity. This year Colorado Multi-Gun LLC is taking over the match.

hey Zak, what do you mean by "Know your Limitations"?

"KYL" involves rewarding the shooter for being able to accurately predict what he can hit, and a negative incentive for taking shots that he misses.

oh, sweet. i ran into the reverse of that in the last match where the stage was set up in a way that i couldn't even see the target (obscured by moving no-shoots that didn't move far enough). i protested, but eventually just had to shoot in the general direction because the penalty for not shooting at it was higher than the penalty for hitting the no-shoots. sorry bout your luck there, mr. hostage.

That sounds like so much fun. You need to have one for rookies some time.

Just jump in-- that's how you stop being a rookie! The Sporting Rifle Match we shoot almost monthly in Raton NM is good practice for the Steel Safari.

The match is already half full, so if you want to shoot it, get your app in ASAP!

The prize table is shaping up pretty good too.
