New Glock break in
RTFM
July 24, 2003, 08:40 AM
Well I tried to post on GlockTalk but the admin seems to be too busy to activate my account there, so THR here we go...
To my amazement my wife fits a Glock compact very well; we are purchasing a G23 (.40 SW) or a G19 (9mm). Depending on how she handles the recoil of the 23.
My question is what (if anything) do you suggest for a new Glock break in?
(Other than throw it away and apologize to my SIG :D)
I tried the search function over there, but did not have much luck.
Thanks for your help.

Fire about 500 rounds then clean. The factory lube should be sufficient to get you started. Kick it across the range parking lot if you start to think it's good looking. The end.

Shoot. Clean occasionally. No worries.

Just shoot it, wipe it down and shoot it some more. The factory lube will be some copper anti-seize looking stuff, it will last a long time if you don't wipe it out. You WILL get streaks in the barrel, and they are fairly hard to clean out. It is normal, and is just the tenifer metal treatment breaking in. Just use a good solvent and a brush to clean lightly, then shoot some more. It is a lot easier to shoot the streaks out than it is to clean them out after each range session. It should stop streaking after 750-1000 rounds or so.

RTFM: These guys are pulling your legs!!
The Break-in for a Glock is as follows:
1. Freeze it to -40 degrees celsius, thaw out and (a) fire a loaded magazine
or 2 through it.
2. Bury it in sand and mud, take out and (a) fire a loaded magazine or 2
through it.
3. Competely degrease chemically and repeat as in (a).
4. Repeatedly run it over by a large SUV and repeat as in (a).
5. Submerse it under water, retrieve and repeat as in (a).
6. Toss it against the wall, retrive and repeat as in (a).
After this, clean, apply minute lubrication, get a good holster, keep it in the holster and remember 'Finger off trigger unless about to fire'.
Tell us how it goes!!;)

I called the Glock factory when I got mine and asked them the same question. They told me that they consider it broke in at around 80,000 rounds. He didn't sound like he was being facitious.
They did say not to clean the copper colored lube out of it until around 1000 rounds though. If you already did, you can get more at the bicycle shop. You'll know it when you see it, its copper colored. Some kind of anti seize lube. I still use the stuff on mine.

Glocks don't seem to need any kind of break-in. I would recommend a good clean & light lube prior to inaugural shoot but that's about it...oh & alot of quality ammo ;) Have fun & congrats!

Get the 19. Cheaper to shoot and all modern defensive ammo is about the same.

Island Beretta, you forgot the part where you are supposed to fire at least 5 clips though them underwater.
And no need to ever dissassemble a Glock as they keep running forever. No need to ever clean the extractor either. They're magical!

Break it in by sending it to Tam. It'll take a few months. :D

"quality ammo"?
I started my 21 in by feeding it lots of Wolf and 1950's vintage surplus. (It was cheap, and afterward my hands needed cleaning more than the gun did.) It's on about round 8-9K now, and it hasnt changed since it came out of the box.

New Glock
Slide, clean around the copper compound with cotton swabs
Frame, clean completely
Barrel, clean with bore solvent
Lightly lube and you're good to go.
After the first range visit clean and lube without worrying about the copper compound. It's already done it's job.
I would avoid unjacketed ammo because of Glock's hexagonal rifling, especially with a .40. Stick to quality ammo to avoid problems.
Make sure you get a "F" or higher serial number to avoid the frame recall worries.:cuss:
If you're looking at the G19/23 give the G26/27 a hard look too.

Takes that long huh? :scrutiny:

Hey, I'm just relaying what they said. I'm not sure I believe it though.
I didn't do anything special to break mine in. Just loaded it up and shot it. I do continue to use the copper colored anti seize lube.
They also said that at about 35000 rounds, you can expect the little trigger safety to break. I'm not there yet.

Step 1. Go to Wal*Mart.
Step 2. Buy all the 100 round value packs insight, repeat at as many Wal*Marts as possible.
Step 3. Go to the local range and empty the value packs.
Step 4. Repeat.
