How do you do it? I've heard of a $200 tax associated with cutting the barrels down on something. Are there requirements/paperwork you have to fill out?
Also, how do you physically do it? Is it okay to just take the ol' hacksaw to your surplus weapon, or do you need a gunsmith to do it for you?

If you yourself are going to make a SBR, then you fill out a Form 1. Pay the$200, fingerprints, CLEO sign, etc. When it gets approved then you can cut down the barrel. Legally you can cut it yourself with a butterknife if you want. You probably would be better served having a gunsmith do it, however.

I just got done doing my first SBR. The paperwork is a bit of a hassle. The largest hassle is getting the fingerprinting done and getting the chief LEO sign off. Some LEO's wont do it. If that is the case, you're forced to go the "Corporation/trust" route... which I'm told is easier anyway. However, my CLEO signed off with no reservations.

As to the barrel cutting... I went to a machinist's shop and had them do the work. I pressed off the barrel myself. They took metal saw and cut off the barrel at the correct place... then trued it up with a lathe. Next, they used a 45 degree pilot to put a good, concentric crown on the muzzle. Ended up costing me 75 bucks, but the work wouldnt have been any better had I sent it off to a top dollar gunsmith.

Chipperman, I like the idea you posed. My FFL wants me to do the Form 4 as I did with my supressor, and in the meantime he will hold my SBR and modify it and then send in a Mfgr. Form (not sure of the number) and when I'm approved, he will give it back to me. Your route allows me to keep playing with my toys while I wait on BATF approval.

Don't forget to engrave the maker's name, city and state (or recognized abbreviations thereof) if you do it yourself on a Form 1...
