I live in Illinois. Can I legally order .223 ammo from Cabela's website and have it shipped directly to me or do I have to go through an FFL dealer to make the purchase?

Legally, you are supposed to present your FOID card while purchasing ammo. Some companies require that you fax/mail them a copy of your FOID before purchasing, others don't. It's up to Cabella's. Just try placing an order or give them a phone call to see if they have any shipping restrictions.

I choose to order my ammunition from companies that don't require this hassle.

I have bought from Cheaper Than Dirt before a number of times and they never asked for FOID information.

A lot of people here recommend www.ammoman.com and he does require a FOID car. Midway requires a FOID card: http:/www.midwayusa.com/foid

Rather than argue with your understanding of the law, I will just quote it. As I read it you have to send them a copy of your FOID and your DL. I have always sent them a scanned copy by email.

(430 ILCS 65/3) (from Ch. 38, par. 83‑3)
Sec. 3.
(b‑5) Any resident may purchase ammunition from a person outside of Illinois. Any resident purchasing ammunition outside the State of Illinois must provide the seller with a copy of his or her valid Firearm Owner's Identification Card and either his or her Illinois driver's license or Illinois State Identification Card prior to the shipment of the ammunition. The ammunition may be shipped only to an address on either of those 2 documents.

I have never needed to send a copy of my drivers license, only a FOID. Neither were needed to purchase ammunition from CTD, Wideners, or Outdoor Marksman. National Bullet company also did not require them, but they also don't see it necessary to deliver products after you've paid them, either.

I was not quoting the law. It's your choice to abide by state law and the dealers decision whether or not to require those two forms of ID before purchase. Order ammo from anyone you want.

Hmmmm, if you buy ammuntion locally (within the State of Illinois) you have to show your FOID card.

If you try to buy ammuntion mail order and the company asks to see your FOID card (to comply with Illinois law and keep Lisa Madigan off their butts) everyone wants to rant and rave about the hassle and scream what a bad company they are.

Yep, those evil mail order companies are at it again, trying to avoid being charged/sued by the State of Illinois when they could just stand up for all of Illinois gun owners and "take one for the team"......
