Ruger vs. Ruger

Ok, I have always felt sort of bad that I dont own a Ruger semi. It seems that if you dont have one that you are missing out on the unbreakable, rugged, butt ugly deal of the century. So with a $40 manufacturer rebate baiting me ...
What do you all think of the P90 or the P97. I actually like the two tone models with the Hogue grips. Although I dont think the 97 is available with the Hougue grips.

I much prefer the grip shape and feel of the P97. Hogue slip-on grips are avaialble for the P97, just FYI.
Hold both and you'll note the difference, which you'll prefer is anybody's guess.
I did not note any measurable differences in performance between the P90 I used ot own and the P97 I still own.
YMMV

One of the P90's that I own is the most accurate 45acp handgun I own. I own a lot of 45acp's but this one will even feed mt cases from the mag. Completly box stock, with Hogue slip on grips. Might be ugly but I'll never let go of it. But then I never let go of any guns anyway. :D :D

I had a Ruger P-90, it was very accurate, but carrying it was like strapping a brick on to my side, and attempting concealed carry was an exercise in futility. Too big, too heavy for me.

I've never been a big fan of the Ruger pistol. I do have a buddy tho that loves his & shoots it alot. They do seem like really good values.

Concerning butt ugly--I do wish that Ruger would redesign their grips for their polymer pistols such as 95 and 97. . But the alloy framed pistols such as 89 and 90 take perfectly fitting, inexpensive Hogue grips which make them quite attractive, military, and brutal looking IMO. And I like the looks of the SS slides on all the pistols--a tasteful matte gray.
Concerning carrying almost full-size pistols. People have been carrying 1911s (38 oz.?) for decades. The Ruger pistols, c. 27-34 oz. are also carriable. I find that a large waist pack is the most comfortable method. Is a waist pack totally gay if it has a loaded .45 in it? I think not. And you can carry a knife and an extra mag in the pack as well. But IWB, cross carry, can work if your pants are big enough. I can even carry my 95 in the pocket of some of my shorts, but it is a bit heavy.

I was never a big fan of Ruger pistols either until I got a P-95. It is much like a P-97. It is very different from the other Ruger guns, it is light weight and has a smaller grip that the all metal guns. If you plan on carrying it, the P-97 is the one, if it is just a range gun, choose whatever gun feels best.

My P97 makes nice ragged one hole groups at 10 yards offhand and has a fairly good trigger( comparing it to a SIG which I would call excellent). The gun is light, but handles recoil well. It also goes bang everytime you pull the trigger, but then it's a Ruger.

If you were looking at the 9mm I'd say go polymer. In .45acp go with the alloy.
I had a P89 which was 100% reliable and I'm sure it would have been unbreakeable. I am completely confident that had I kept it I would still be reporting 0 malfunctions. However, it wasn't very accurate (maybe on the low side of average). I know it wasn't just me (I was a new shooter) because I was more accurate with range rentals I was unfamiliar with and with my buddy's P90 (same gun in .45) and my buddy was inaccurate w/ my 89. I hear the P95 is more accurate than the P89.
A friend had a P90 which was also 100% reliable (I think, if it wasn't it was darned close). It was also incredibly accurate. I've heard that Ruger .45s in general are quite accurate so I doubt that his was an abberation. If I get another Ruger auto it will probably be a P90 (though I do sometimes miss my P89, being that it was my first auto, so I just might have to buy another P89 for nostalgia sake). I have heard that at least the early P97s (I don't know if the newer ones are the same) were not up to Ruger's quality standards.
Get the P90 and you'll probably be happy. Yes, Ruger autos are ugly, but I liked the looks of mine despite (possibly because of) that. They are most certainly bulky, blocky, bricks (weight isn't the only issue for guns you may want to carry) but I get the feeling this is a "want" and not a "need" so you probably won't be using it for carry. They are inexpensive and 100% reliable. Why not!?

i felt that the 97's grip was better feeling in my hand. it was smoother (more rounded) and felt smaller. if you need the palm swells, you could always slip on a set of hogues
the 90 i handled just felt blockier but it smelled to balance further back in the hand. i'm sure it was also stronger as it was designed for the 10mm round
neither of their triggers was anything to rave about, but both were amazingly accurate

Not to get off thread topic but everybody hates the way Rugers look. Nobody seems to have anything bad to say about the way they shoot. I've owned several Rugers (wheel guns and self loaders) and they all shoot well.

I have had good luck with both the P-95 /P-90, about a 1000 rds through each without a single problem , I have been real impressed with the accuracy of the P-90.

I've got a KP89, and I love it.. Happily feeds _anything_ I've thrown at it, put 50 rounds through it last time trying to see if I could "limp wrist" it and cause a malfunction, cases would sort of fall out, land on my boot, but it continued to work perfectly. Trigger is a little funky, took some getting used to, after 1000 rds it seems to be getting much better, or I'm getting more used to it. I even have two of the $10 hi-caps for it, just about have to hammer them in the gun, and you'd bet $50 they would never feed properly, but they do.. (still only practice mags).
I like it so much that my next handgun WILL be a KP90. My buddy recently picked one up used NIB for $250. I was planning on a 1911 style pistol, but due to my current money situation (baby on the way) $1000 guns are out for a bit ;)
Maybe I've got a screw loose, but I LIKE the looks of the ruger stainless slide / aluminum frame two-tone combination.
I've used it for ccw, acceptable IWB.. but primarily my ccw amounts to a truck gun.

I must be totally nuts because I LOVE the way the Rugers looks. :scrutiny:
I have a P89 that I only have about 300 or so rounds through, but I like it so much that I want a P90 to go with it. I have thought about the P97, but its seems like the P90 is a little more reliable.

Axeman;
I've had a P90 for years, reliable as a bucket of rocks. Accurate too. Got it on a store ad flyer misprint, so it was dirt cheap also. Hell of a good knock-around gun, can't beat it.

I've owned two P97's. The first one was bought when they first came out, only to be sold when inflicted with near fatal case of CZitis. Had to buy a second one to replace the one I sold. Won't sell it again. (Did the same with Ruger's P95, too.)

my 89 is great.
the 90 is basically the .45 variant of the 89.
Personally (I have big hands) I liked the way the 89-90 types fit my hands better than the 95-97 types.
Both will be extremely reliable and by all accounts, surprisingly accurate (for some reason the Ruger .45s are considerably more accurate than the Ruger 9mms)
Don't expect to carry the 90 though - while not particularly heavy, it is very bulky.

I used to own a Ruger P90 two tone with the Hogue grips. It was my first centerfire pistol. It was a great range/field gun. I'd choose the p90 over the p97 mainly because I don't like the polymer grips on the p95/97. They just feel so slippery to me. I've shot the 95 and the 97, both are great shooters.
Go check both out and see which one feels better in your hands.

I have a KP-90 (stainless steel matte finish uppers) with 2500 rounds and 3 malf's 1 operator error (lock in the mag, Doh!) 2 bad ammo. Rugers are... well bulkier than a 1911, but I know it will go Bang! every time I mash the trigger. Only 'extra' on mine is the Hogue wraparound grip.
