I recently bought a well-used Marlin 1894 in .44 mag. I intend to use it for deer hunting primarily, with HD being a possibility as well. From what I understand I can expect to use this out to 100yds or so effectively, out to about 150 or so in a stretch. SO that being said I can't really see putting a scope on it and I was wondering what would be the best open sight set-up to use? I am seriously considering the XS sight system, but wanted to hear about some other options.

Any opinions, questions, etc. are welcome.

I've used Lyman's, Williams and AO's sights. I really like AO's front sight the best (post with a vertical white line). I'm not real thrilled with the older non-adjustable AO sight, but the new one looks better. Right now my Marlin .44 has the Lyman as I can zero the rifle to different loads.

I had a Williams mounted on my 1894P and replaced it with a Lyman when one of the windage adjustment screws stripped out. Both are good sights but I prefer the Lyman and believe it to be worth the extra money.

I've used the Express Sights before, and like them, but I've also used Williams peep sights, and like them too. I think the ideal combination might be the Ashley front sight, with white center line and flat top, and a Williams or Lyman rear peep sight. I plan on setting up a .44 Magnum Marlin with this combination sometime later this summer, and trying it out. Should be very interesting.

I like the Lyman 66 receiver(peep)sight, I have one on my 45-70 and it has held up very well to the heavy loads I use.

I have the Winchester 94 Trapper in .357. My setup is the OEM front sight paired with a Lyman 66 receiver sight as backup. Primary sight is a 1-inch-tube Propoint with 4moa dot mountd just ahead of the ejection port in the space from the back of the front receiver ring to the rear sight dovetail. It is mounted very low to the barrel and is light and compact. It has weaver mounts so I can remove it in a hurry to use the backup irons but it does not co-witness. I like both the red dot and Lyman very much. One suggestion for the Lyman if you will be using the gun to hunt; leave off both rear sight apetures as just use the threaded ring they screw into as a semi- "ghost ring." It is faster this way and you get more light to the eye. For all purposes a levergun and satisfy, the ghost ring will be just as accurate and easier to use.

I recently got a Marlin 1894 357 and got a Marble's tang sight from American outdoors and it is a great setup. I have not hunted with it yet but it is very sturdy.

Minotaur, Do you want open sights or a peep? I'm unfamiliar with the XS sight system but believe all of the sights mentioned by the other posters are aperture sights. By definition those are not open sights. Open means open to the sky.
