This was from the first hide I tanned myself.

A bit thin for holster leather.
You might do better to use the skin as lining material for a soft case.
As is the holster you've made will serve to protect the gun from nicks and scratches on the way to and from the range. If you run across some more substantial leather you could unlace your holster and glue the two together using regular rubber cement, then punch the holes using the first piece as a guide and relace it.

If you do remember that the outer layer would compress the inner if just folded so it would work better to glue them together while folded to the final shape.

Also I always cover the base of a snap with leather so the metal doesn't scratch the finish.

PS
The hide looks nice, looks like you've got the tanning part down pat.

Agreed. Sew it up with some fleece and padding and make a gun rug out of it.

Nice job fella! I'll bet he was quite pleased. My little brother died a couple of days after Thanksgiving. Needless to say, I'm waay jealous! Merry Christmas.

Many years ago I had my older brother leave his 1910 mauser .25 pocket pistol with me for a couple of days so I could look up its value, or so I told him. I made a nice shoulder holster with the straps removable and a belt loop on the holster so he could also wear it on his belt. I finished it all up in basket weave and a rich medium brown finish.
He was tickled pink.

wonderful thought, good first start, however your selection of WHAT To make him was not all that good IMHO. I just cannot imagine trusting that holster.

Seems to me you would be better off making a leather case for a rifle, or what about a case designed to hold cleaning rods, patches, bottles, etc. Or a magazine organizer, etc.

Thanks for the replies. I gave it to him on christmas and he was really happy.
The combo wasn't really meant for "every day" use (he has a ccw holster) but since he's in scouting he will use it at scout camp and such.

We went shooting last friday, and he wore the holster. It seems to work pretty well :)

Looks great but the gesture is what counts. Hope he had a Merry Christmas!
