The Grizzley 300 cast didnt do very well. I'll post a pick of the bullet taken from a nice East Texas White Tail. Took 3 shots in the vitals to kill the deer. On a spike it took two in the vitals to kill.

The Winchester premium 250 hollow points work great as do the 240 semi jacketed from Remington.

I hope to use the 300s on a pig or two later in the year. Mabey their muscle and bone will be able to deform the bullt for premium damage.

The Gizzleys group really well but that big cast bullet doesnt deform in an East Texas Whit Tail.

Did you actually recover one of those 300 grain bullets from a WT deer? I'm surprised at that. Those 300 grain loads are really intended for deep penetration on heavy game, not quick expansion on lighter game. If you found one in the deer I'd love to see it - please post pics.

That being said, I don't think three rounds in the chest were really needed to bring down the deer. Probably 15 more seconds would have done it, but I understand if you are near the property line you don't have that luxury.

I found one bullet just under the skin. Second one.

The other 2 didnt go through.

Or at least I didnt see any exit wounds from the inside.

I love how they shoot and group.

I lost a small buck on opening day and now I suspect it is from the bullet not opening up.

They really shoot good but I'm gonna stick to the 250s. I bet in a big Bear they would really open up. Or in a big ole pig.

Just not good for WT. Need a softer lead bullet.

On the big buck I shot him a little back. He went down and tried to get up. I put another right in the boiler room. He went down again. When I walked up on him he was still very much alive and not bleeding much. Shot him again and he finally died.

I like a 240 gr SP in front of a heavy load of H110 or a 300 gr XTP also with a heavy load of H110. I am really surpised you didn't get exit wounds with the cast bullet. Those Tex deer must be tougher than our Missouri ones.

Sorry for the bad pic but I think you get the idea.

A hard cast bullet will not reliably expand on a deer size animal umless it hits heavy bone. The idea is to shoot a bullet with a wide meplate to punch a hole all the way through. Was this a factory load or a handload? Either way how fast was it moving in FPS? I shot a small deer this year with a 45/70 and a 300 gr Oregon Trail cast and while it took two shots as the gun was sighted in at 100 yards and the deer was at 50 and the first shot was high, both shots went all the way through. These were at about 1400 FPS.

On whitetails, I think you'd be better off with Horandy's XTP or a semi-jacketed soft point. You simply don't need the penetration and these will probably shoot all the way through as well in a typical shot.
