I have a friend who has decided to purchase new pistol and has asked my advice on what he should get, he has narrowed down his choices to these three kinds. Smith & Wesson Sigma .40
Beretta 92
Ruger 9mm P series. I don't know which one of these is the better pistol but i have heard a lot of good comments about the Ruger. What would you recommend?

I would recommend he get to a range and try them out before he buys one. You can get lots of advice on what we like, but only he can say what works for him. Each of those have a loyal following who can sing the praises of each. But him trying is the BEST advice we can give.

If that fails then get the Ruger. Cost effective, solid, good shooter.

As weisse52 said, try them or at least handle them and choose the one that feels best. They are all decent guns with loyal followings. None is a bad choice. Personally I'm not a big fan of the ruger P series but a couple weeks ago I was talking to/shooting next to someone with an old Ruger P and he was very good with it and liked it a lot. The same sort of story could be related about any of those guns.

It's nice to have a lot of good choices. :)

I finally put PSI adjustable fiber optic sights on my old P89 and now that it's dialed in it is as accurate as anything I've shot. These are worth a look...

Neither of those. Have him try a Glock.

The only way to know is to rent them out at your local gun range.

the sigmas work and that is the bottom line but i am not a fan. the 92 series is a great platform that many the world over use and love. i am not a fan for 2 reasons, 1 it is da/sa and also because the grip is so huge.

the ruger p series, are nice i owned a p95 and i now have the p345. the p95 was nice, accurate and reliable, but it was a little big for my hand, and i didn't shoot it as well as i thought i should have been able too. now the p345 is great in the hand and a great accurarte gun that i continue to be impressed with.

the sigma is total crap! it is a knockoff of the Glock and s&w had to pay millions in court. it is almost like a Glock, except that the trigger is worse, and they are proned to jams, unlike the Glock.

If I had to choose among the three that you listed, I'd go with the beretta. Given another choice, I'd go with a Glock.

I'd tell him to look into the new Ruger SR9 9mmNATO pistol. It's a new series semi-auto but holds 17 rds :D and has many great features. The P models are good but the Ruger SR9 is far better.

The Beretta M-9/M-9a1 9mmNATO or the 92FS series are well made and proven. Some consider the 92/96 line dated but they have many after market holsters/parts/etc ;). I had 2 NIB 96Ds that were good pistols. A bit on the heavy side, though.

S&W Sigma pistols are OK but no one would call them super great. Most sell for low prices.

I went to my local shop in the St. Louis area to purchase a new CZ75B a few weeks back. I had my heart set on it, and told the salesman so, but I still got the hard sell on the Sigma. "Smith and Wesson quality", he said. "Special discount, just for today," he said.

Talk about red flags flying. No thanks, Herb Tarlek. Wrap up the Czech beauty, and I'll meet you at the register.

How are you able to try out the guns before you purchase them?

Most ranges have a variety of pistols for rent so you can give them a try. The range I normally use has a good selection of brands, types, and calibers so you can try before you buy...

some gun ranges have it set up where you can rent guns an try them out. this is normally an indoor range/ gunshop combo but not always limited to the indoors though.

If his hand fits it comfortably, the Beretta.

What ever is most comfortable. I would suggest also looking at Glock if it will fit him.
