Do any of you guys know who can do front strap checkering on my 1911 in the DFW or Northeast Texas area? I'm trying to avoid sending it off.

Thanks............

Brownells sells an $8 piece that fits under the grips and wraps around the front. Is only a few thousandths thick to simulate a good checkering. They also sell jigs and files to cut your own. Easy enough to get a 1911 casting from Sarco or elsewhere for $20 to have something to practice on before you try the real thing.

The Brownell's (actually Wilson) piece mentioned is less than satisfactory. Although it matches the color of stainless fairly well it has a tendency to move under recoil since it's held in place by only a sliver with most grips. In blued it looks pretty obvious and also would tend to move.

doing it yourself is possible but be prepared to practice on things beside your expensive pistol. Aluminum rod makes a pretty good practice material that won't dull your files. It will clog files more frrequently than steel will though and can be harder to remove.

Try Gunmasters in Plano. If he doesn't do it he will know somebody that does.
