I'm trying to decide on which replacement recoil pad to install on my Rem 870 Express (synthetic stk). The two products I'm currently considering are:

Remington R3 recoil pad for synthetic stock #19469

Pachmayr PRE-FIT DECELERATOR(R) RECOIL PAD for 870/11-87 Post-99 • Stock - Syn. #1745

Primary usage would be for aerial targets.

Any recommendations / preferences?

R3 or Limbsaver (same thing, different logo on the pad).

I like my Pachmayr pads, but if you're going to shoot at clays a lot, I prefer the Limbsaver.

As ArmedBear said, R3 and Limbsaver are the same animal.

Limbsaver pads work. Period.

Thru a part number mistake, I acquired the (wrong) pre-99 Pachmayr Decelerator and the correct Rem R3 pad. The R3 pad on examination is a more impressive design for recoil reduction, IMHO.

I've installed the R3 on my synthetic-stock 870 Express.

I've got the R3 pad on my 870 Express synthetic and couldn't be happier with it. Perfect fit and it makes an unbelievable differrence in felt recoil.

I have an older WingMaster. Most of the R3's I'm seeing, say they are for Synthetic Stocks.

I am only aware of the police walnut stocks having R3 pads. They are listed in the Remington parts catalog- the R3, screws, and stock are separate parts numbers. Give Remington a call. They have been very helpful when i have called.

Does anyone have experience with or opinions about the Sims Limbsaver Speedmount (http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=24390&title=LIMBSAVER~%20SPEED%20MOUNT%20RECOIL%20PAD) recoil pad? Among the shotguns for which it's made is the Wingmaster with a wood stock. My primary interest in it is "tactical."

Kinda neat. I haven't used it specifically.

However, I do have some experience with a couple of different "speed mount" options. The most versatile is "Slick Eez", which is a coating you apply yourself to any part of the pad that hangs up on your clothing. It works very well. If you do it just right and apply it to the top part of the pad, you can make the pad slide into place, then stop in the right spot when the stickier rubber hits your shirt.

Do you think the Limbsaver Speedmount worth a try for this application or should I go for the standard Limbsaver/R3?

I just got in an old 18.5" Wingmaster (not a Magnum) that needs new furniture. I'll order in the Police walnut furniture but I don't know if the stock comes with a recoil pad. If not, I'll want to order the pad at the same time. This one looked like an intriguing possibility. My primary concern, of course, is how effective it will be in reducing the effects of perceived recoil.

I've eyed Slick Eez but never saw any comments about it until yours.

On another note, I did take a closer look at the 870 trigger and now I see what you mean. All these years it didn't bother me. Now it probably will. Argh.

My 870 never really did. The same trigger on an 1100 does, probably because the movement of the action when it autoloads moves the trigger just enough to trap my finger or rub against it the wrong way. That said, trigger shoes are nicer than the stock triggers one way or another.:)

The speedmount pad looks like it will work well to reduce perceived recoil; it may be a bit thinner than some R3/Limbsaver pads, but it looks thick enough. Slick Eez would work on it, or another one. The picture looks like the pad shape is pretty nice.

Robert, the angled top to ease mounting is not new to the R3. One Pachmyer has had the same feature for a decade or so. Commonly seen on SC shotguns.

The Sims/Limbsaver pads work well. I'm sure you'll be happy with either.
