Ugghhh. After field stripping and cleaning my SA 1911, I cannot for the life of me get the slide release re-installed. Its hanging up on something... I just can't figure out what. It can be inserted into just the frame without any problems and it will slide through the barrel link without problems. So it seems to be something with the slide on the left of the pistol.

Any suggestions?

Wiggle it. Take everything apart, and do it again.

Cussing sometimes helps.

Make sure the barrel link hole is lined up with the slide release hole. The pin goes through the link, so you might just be hitting the link. Wiggling the slide a little can get it to line up. Play with it a little. When the pin DOES go through, the lever end of the slide release needs to be pushed UPWARDS into it's position, not straight in.

Try this:

Notice on the top, back portion of the slide stop, there is a little beveled edge. Put the slide stop through the frame and place that beveled area against the plunger. Now, with the slide in the proper position, press in and up firmly. If the plunger isn't too stiff, that should work.

Note: be careful not to run the slide stop against the gun, or you will get one of those ugly, crescent shaped scratches on your frame.

Hope it works for you. It usually does, but, then again, something else might be wrong.

I agree -- stiff plunger. Go in and up. Use something thin for protection if you think you might get an idiot mark. Try using a small something or other to depress the plunger if nothing else works. You'll want to use your third hand for that, of course.

And don't forget to line up the clearance notch in the slide with the slide stop hole.
