Model 36-1 Question

I have a model 36-1 (shown here with my 4" Redhawk) and a question. The cylinder turns clockwise freely with the hammer down. That's clockwise from behind the gun. When cocked, the cylinder locks up tightly. My newer revolvers do not turn in either direction with the hammer down. Is this normal for an not-so-new Smith or is something wrong?

No revolver - of any make - should ever have the cylinder turn freely with the hammer down. How would the cylinder stay indexed as the hammer falls?

Your cylinder stop or cylinder stop spring is broken or missing. If it is the stop, it will have to be fit to the gun by a gunsmith. If its just the spring missing I can walk you through how to do it once you get the part.
Give me a few Ill take a picture to explain it better.

No revolver - of any make comment from The Lone Haranguer is incorrect...
alot of the cheap revolvers from the 60's and 70's such as RG did not have a cylinder stop.

This is the cylinder stop.
You can also see the spring that makes it work.
If your gun has that part sticking up through the bottom of the frame, then its most likely the spring.

Thanks, Seiko! I see the stop, it must be the spring.. I appreciate the effort.
