Saw this on www.packing.org. Didn't see it posted here yet ('less I missed it). Kind of in the same vein as the story of open carry in the Mall of America.
First post in thread:
Channel 9 fox news (local) did a story last night on the 9pm news about open carry with the new permit law.
They sent some permit holders out into downtown Minneapolis with guns on their hips in belt slide holsters (plain sight). They filmed their interaction with civilians and 4 encounters with the Minneapolis Police Dept.
Three of the encounters with the police went ok well (bad attitude aside), but on one encounter an officer approached the permit holder with gun drawn and disarmed the permit holder.
He then handcuffed him for almost 20 minutes while he "verified" the permit. The officer was seen unloading the gun before un-cuffing the permit holder and letting him go. That officer appeared to be about 22 years old.
They also said they followed a permit holder around in the suburbs for a day (this is not shown in the tape). He visited a fast food restaurant, a car dealer, a mall and a retail store. Not a single word from anyone about his gun.
They ended the segment with an interview with David Gross, an attorney who does work with MN CCRN. He said that if the police continue this kind of approach (including handcuffing and unlawful detainment) that a lawsuit could follow.
I think what channel 9 did was a good thing, it may be what was needed to get the word out these police officers that open carry is not illegal It also lets them know that a camera may be watching their every move.
