I have 2 S&W 38 specials. I would like to find out the age and value of these handguns.
The serial numbers are 302089 and 320717.

You really don't have to go elsewhere to get your question answered, but a little more information would be helpful. The problem is that Smith & Wesson made more then one model chambered to use the .38 Special cartridge.

The serial number is usually stamped on the butt, and sometimes on the rear face of the cylinder, and on the bottom of the barrel flat above the ejector rod. The number may or may not include a letter prefix such as "C" "D" "V" or "S".

On some older models patent dates are stamped on top of the barrel. If this is the case with your revolver what are the last two dates?

How long is the barrel (measure from the front of the cylinder to the end of the muzzle). Does it have fixed or adjustable sights? Is it blued or nickel plated?

Given this information we should have an answer in quick order. ;)

Monetary value depends on condition and variation of the guns. It could range from $100 or less to close to $1000.

These revolvers are pre-war Smith & Wesson M&P's, also known as the Model of 1905 4th change.

302089 and 320717 would fall between 1915 and 1945.

With photos, I might be able to give you a more exact date, but Roy Jinks (http://xavierthoughts.blogspot.com/2006/01/collectors-treasure.html), the S&W historian can give you an exact date of shipment on each gun for $30 each.

With a series of accurate photos of each revolver, I might be able to give you an idea of what each would bring on the market as well.

Here are a few pre-war Smith & Wesson M&P's to compare.
