Ok, being a complete noob to the purchasing of firearms, is it normal for the shop to call the Fubar'ed Bumbling Idiots for a simple Czech Mauser?

I was a little skeptical, even though I am as innocent as a newborn puppy (as far as the law goes:p ). I am uncomfortable with it being on paper that a gun resides at my house in someone's records besides the gun shop, and I find it a little unsettling even then.

Whats nice is at least you know they don't have any records that are wrong in their databases about you and a record of any kind. Many have been denied wrongfully and would have never known the problem otherwise.

Not only is it required on all transactions made through FFLs, the "insta-check" may not be all that "insta." Lately, we've been having checks take upwards of an hour at the shop I'm hanging out at this summer.

or in my state (iowa), a permit to acquire pistols and revolvers! ;) (assuming you aren't "special enough" that the sherrif will let you have a CHL/CCW:cuss: )

Only because you are complying with one of three exemptions to the NICS background check. The two common exemptions are you possess a state permit that ATF will accept as an alternative or the transfer of a NFA firearm.

For everyone else, ALL firearms transferred to a non-licensee by an FFL MUST comply with the NICS instant background check.

An amusing non-exemtion is the C&R (03) FFL holder. He is exempt when acquiring C&R firearms, but must meet the requirements for modern firearm transfers.
