Does anyone have one of those lockboxes/safes that bolt into the center console of your car, truck, or SUV?

How do they work?

I've been thinking about making my own, maybe something a little faster to get into action.

Does anyone know if a drop-in is made for my vehicle (2004 Explorer) ?

Anybody made their own?

When I got my CCW a few years back, I went to a local truck modify/gadget shop, and asked that same question. NO! I was then told that the serious car break-in artist (not the break-grab-run guys) knows more about that car than the people that put it together. They wouldn't try to break into the safe, but just take the console, or whatever. He suggested the less complicated stamped, under the seat, book-size safe, to foil the parking lot break-in. Hopefully, there is, or will be a more secure way to store your gun in the car, as most of us have to disarm at least once or twice, while running around town. Keep looking and asking questions, and post if you find something workable. :)

There are lots of ways to do it. I would avoid the more expensive "truck vaults" made from thin metal. The one I found has a mechanical simplex lock, the door is spring loaded open and has anti pry lips. All of it made out of 1/8th inch steel. Just make sure to bolt/weld it to the frame and not the plastic console. I hired a custom car shop to weld the bolts into the frame.

But a hard case cable locked under the seat would work good also.

Over the years its prevented two thefts. Not only does it protect my gun if the need arises, but it also protects my music devices and gps units.

My job looks very professional and was done for less than 200 bucks (both Safe and installation). Great piece of mind. I can't remember the company I went with, but this website has very similar safes, although the prices seem to have gone way up.

/The custom shop guy was pretty sure I wanted the box to secure drugs, but he didn't seem to care.

I bought 2 large in car lock boxes from Center of Mass (one for each of our cars). They are very well made and seem pretty secure. They aren't as quick to access as something with a simplex lock, but I bought them mostly to secure my CCW and/or other valuables in when I have to leave them in my vehicle. I'd recomend them.

Sportsmans Guide has 'em too.

I have a console safe in my 2003 limited, I would recommend it.
