Welcome to the internet. :D. I usually give it a few hours before I complain about stuff being slow.

If you want to know where a bottleneck might be, do this:

1) Open a DOS window

2) Type "ping www.thehighroad.org" and press ENTER. (This will tell you if you have a connection to the server at all)

3) Type "tracert www.thehighroad.org" and press ENTER

Watch the numbers that come up. What you are seeing is the path from your PC to the server. high numbers are BAD. Low numbers are GOOD. Your PC is route point #1. The server is the last route point.

If the number on the line for the server is high, there is a server problem.

EDIT: Oops! I just realized that I assumed this place was a .COM, when it's a .ORG - I have changed this post to reflect that. My bad... :o

I told my computer to do it, and it laughed at me and called me a jackass. I was forced to give it a good kick, and now it's coughing up Pentium II chips. What do I do?:D

I don't know what the problem was, but everything is ok now.

PS. I know nothing about computers, I am just lucky to even log on to the internet. :uhoh:

Dennis, Just for grins, as you suggested, I pinged www.thehighroad.com (not us ;) ). I got good replies. Then I pinged www.thehighroad.org (us) and got timeouts. Curiouser and curiouser.

Mal, I've pinged THR by its domain name plus its IP address a week or so ago and gotten timeouts when everything's been working fine. I figured that the DNS information had not been fully propagated across the Web backbone. In any event, it was strange!

I get that same problem, Mal. That's weird stuff.

Ah! The old light bulb just lit up.

I think Derek has an Acme Super Firewall (tm reg) installed on the server. So we wiley coyotes won't be able to ping the system. It's a good thing.

Mal's right and security is tight (InfoSec's my game ;) ) . Only a few select ports are open and ping isn't one of them.

There's a big bottleneck in the Megapath network which is were the traceroute dies.

:uhoh:Are you guys messing with me?:scrutiny:

Nope, things are really slow. Traceroute is showing just over 2 seconds of delay through the four hops in the Megapath network right now.
