That little, thin, solid rod down the middle is called a "center pin" or "center rod."
If your cylinder does not spin freely when in the ejecting and reloading position, then it is possible that you have a bent crane, a bent ejector rod, and/or a bent center pin. Take the thing to a revolver spcialist, that is not a normal condition. It might be something simple, too. like dirt on the crane.
As for lube, a simple light coat of oil is sufficient.

On the right hand side of the frame, towaed the front and just above the trigger guard you'll see a screw. Using a correctly ground screwdriver*, back that screw out. Then swing the cylinder out, and you can ease it and the yoke off of the frame. Next pull the yoke off, and out of the cylinder.
Wipe the yoke clean, lightly oil (not grease) it, and reassemble in reverse order.
* Correct screwdrivers ground to fit the screws found in S&W revolvers, and be purchased at: www.brownells.com

I usually go a step further, and spray G96 Gun Treatment on the yoke and in the cylinder around the ejector rod, also under the ejector rod at the back of the cylinder. Let it drain, then wipe down, and use some good gun oil. As Old Fuff says, don't use grease.
