View Full Version : Stoning & blacking the front sight

Still wondering why I always see a "bright horizontal line" on the top of my front sight, I cleaned it off and used a 30x magnifier on it. This "match" Bushmaster sight post had deep pitting on the top surface and an irregular rear edge.

I stoned it, and I think I made the edge about three times crisper than it was. Then I re-blued it, but I'm never happy with the Birchwood-Casey brand of cold blue.

After some Rig sight black spray, the horizontal line seems to be gone.

I tried using the smoke from a match, but got poor results. What is the correct way to use a match - hold the sight above or within the flame; or blow it out & let the smoke adhere?

ITB,

Never tried using a match to smoke my sights, but I don't believe there is enough carbon from a match to do it right.... and quick. Obviously it can be used in a pinch, but it's not a "best choice" solution.

A carbide sight smoker is the way to go.

Yup, either a carbide smoker ( I use the one from www.ray-vin.com) or the spray black.

In a pinch a MRE spoon will give a great black surface.
