John M. Browning was born on January 21 [or 23 depending what source you use] 1855.

It is only fitting and proper that a person responsible for providing the means for defending our rights and freedom be appropriately recognized.

I therefore propose that January 21, 2008 be celebrated as John Moses Browning Day and that, since most of the kids will be off school that day, they be taken to a local gun shop to better appreciate the contribution of this truly great American

Next year we can celebrate on January 23, just to be fair.

How about I take one of my 1911s out for lunch that day? But seriously, I think it would be a great idea just to talk with your kids about who JMB was and all that he accomplished. What would be even more interesting would be to take a 1911 apart and then ask your kids how do they think Mr. Browning came up with this design; how did he imagine all these strange little parts and make them all work together to make a functional gun. And then ask them how do they think he did this without a computer, without the Internet, without a calculator, and without some enormous corporate R&D department behind him. Now that would be educational, and something they most certainly wouldn't be taught at school.

I like that idea BB !! Very few of today's kids get to have their natural curiousity about 'how things work' satisfied. Or have the opportunity to develop mechanical and hand and labor skills.

Our society is geared to some caring parent tell their kid, "So you want a car ? Go build one. ", and follow up with some judiciously sparse financial and physical help. Much easier to just buy him one. And government isn't too helpful along those lines, either...... >MW

I'd certainly be happy to celebrate it. Beats the hell outta valentine's day.

I see a fairground with kids and parents competing in various events:

Three-legged open carry race
Speed reloading (first to reach 1000 rds is the winner)
Browning poetry contest
Horseshoe toss/Skeet shooting (combined event)
100-yard dash (carrying 1000 rounds)
Laser-engraving art contest

So much for subtle humor. No one checked their new calendar for
holidays.
