Sen. Frank Shurden, who authored the original legislation in 1995, was the Senate sponsor of this year’s changes. The Henryetta Democrat recalled the initial idea for a concealed handgun permit drew a lot of opposition.
“I think at first blush people thought that we’d have a shootout at every fender bender or argument, just like the old Wild West,” Shurden said. “The radicals always try to scare people, but these are good, law-abiding citizens. They’ve got to have a clean record, no history of mental illness. They’re all good folks, and it’s worked real well.”
