As if "Mama Tried" wasn't enough.

http://www.commondreams.org/headlines03/0725-02.htm

I don't even know the Dixie chicks, but I find it an insult for all the men and women who fought and died in past wars when almost the majority of America jumped down their throats for voicing an opinion. It was like a verbal witch-hunt and lynching. Whether I agree with their comments or not has no bearing.... As a country we need to look inward for the answers to the energy of the future. We need to bring down our demands for oil, rebuild some bridges and highways and allow the farmers to grow something that replenishes the soil. Those who don't know what that is, should do some research. The problem is not in Iraq and the answers are not in Iran. I hope were not buried alive beneath this pending financial collapse if the pipeline doesn't get through. Surely everything doesn't depend on oil! He's even got it nailed that it's all about oil...

Yeah, well, boo hoo. I'm insulted he doesn't respect the right of a majority of Americans to voice their opinions.

Maybe mama didn't try hard enough. :)

well, Merle;)

How about a new Haggard song:

It' not about protecting our soil,
Not about routing the enemy....
No, this here war's about oil,
and the President and his memory.
Me, I don't do nothin' without gettin' paid,
I ain't one of them common hicks,
Why, I might even get l***
If'n I meet one of them ditzy chicks!

Y'all kin have that un for free, Merle:D

What is this whining about oil? Same crybabies that would not let us drill in the Western Wastes like Alaska?

I wonder if Merle's limo or tour bus runs on gasoline or water? Knowing Merle, it may be ethanol based!:D

If this is all about oil, where's the shortage? Gas lines? Habeeb and his buddies standing up and saying they will not sell their oil to the great satan and all that noise?

IMO, if this were in any way related to oil, it would be linked to the fact that Saddam was supposed to be trading oil for food, and from what I hear, his oil production was way down and a lot of the equipment was rusting away in the desert.

The last major war about oil was against the Japanese, when the American government decided they would not sell petroleum products to Japan, along with steel and scrap iron.

So far as the Dixie chicks go, I figure they can have any opinion they want, and if I don't like their opinion, I have the right not to buy what they are selling. And that pretty much goes for anyone who I do business with.

What a great country. Even felons like Merle can shoot their mouths off.

Merle, who cares what you or the Chicks think? Include Babs and the Baldwin boys also.

I like to listen to Merle's music, but he's a little off here. The Dixie Chicks have the right to speak, sure. But not buying a record is the equivalent of a "witch hunt?" Does he understand what a witch hunt was actually like? People being tortured, forced to confess to outlandish crimes, drowned and burned (sometimes in the same day . . . . )

What a wild comparison to the horrible indignity of simply having lots of people not buy your music. A lot of people don't buy Eminem records because of his lyrics and his views--is that a witch hunt, too? How many records do you have to buy before you're not discriminating? And if every band is going to get air time so as not to infringe upon their Constitutional Right To Be Paid Handsomely, aren't we going to need a lot more radio stations?

So...

The Dixie Chicks are allowed to have opinions.

I, on the other paw, am part of a 'witch hunt' if I have an opinion about them.

This is one of those "Lords and Serfs" things, right?

Merle and the Dixie Chicks have the right to opinions, but if I have an opnion contrary to theirs, it's a "verbal witch-hunt and lynching."

High Lord Merle and his little coterie of Duchesses can have an opinion, and if my opinion is contrary to their opinion, I have issued "an insult for all the men and women who fought and died in past wars", and how dare I -- is that it?

Merle Haggard can take his royal pretensions and go to hell.

I am an American and if I want to have an opinion on someone or something, I'll by God have an opinion on that subject and if my opinion gets Merles' panties in a bunch to the degree that he feels the need to snivel about the unfairness of my opinion, well here's 35 cents -- call a Waaa-aah-mbulance.

I'll chip in the additional $.65 cents in case it is one of those $1.00 "call anywhere in America for 4 minutes" phones.

It's all about oil. The US doesn't get cheap oil, it gets expensive oil. It also gets the pleasure of protecting the price gougers and even getting attacked by some of them. Give me a break.

If I want to spend my money on something besides a Dicksie Chick CD because I am pissed that they shot their mouths off about something, then that is my right. If I want to express my opinion about the Dicksie Chicks, that is my right as well. Too bad Merle doesn't understand that.

And folks are even free to express the opinion that it's "all" about oil.

Malone, have you ever noticed that nobody who works for a living and whose IQ is higher than room temperature ever gets quoted like this?

Merl Haggard isn't what you'd call a great political thinker you know.

I'd probably trust his opinion about which brand of boubon is smoothest to drink when you're out with somebody elses wife and want to get pleasantly high but don't want to get an upset stomach and be unable to perform later. But political opinion? Nope.

Fighting Side Of Me
By "Merle Haggard"

I hear people talkin' bad
About the way we have to live here, in this country
Harpin' on the wars we fight
An' grippin' 'bout the way things oughta be

An' I don't mind 'em switchin' sides an'
Standin' up for things they believe in
When they're runnin' down my country, man
They're walkin' on the fightin' side of me

Yeah, walkin' on the fightin' side of me
Runnin' down the way of life
Our fightin' men have fought and died to keep

If you don't love it, leave it
Let this song I'm singin' be a warnin'
If you're runnin' down my country man
You're walkin' on the fightin' side of me

I read about some squirrely guy
Who claims, he just don't believe in fightin'
And I wonder just how long
The rest of us can count on bein' free

They love our milk an' honey
But they preach about some other way, of livin'
When they're runnin' down my country, hoss
They're walkin' on the fightin' side of me

Yeah, walkin' on the fightin' side of me
Runnin' down our way of life
Our fightin' men have fought and died to keep

If you don't love it, leave it
Let this song I'm singin' be a warnin'
When you're runnin' down my country, man
You're walkin' on the fightin' side of me

Yeah, walkin' on the fightin' side of me
Runnin' down our way of life
Our fightin' men have fought and died to keep

If you don't love it, leave it
Let this song I'm singin' be a warnin'
If you're runnin' down my country, man
You're walkin' on the fightin' side of me
