Does anyone know the velocity numbers of a 410 Derringer? I can not find this information anywhere.

It's pretty low.

I experimented with a TC SEVEN inch 410 barrel.
I used S&B 5 ball 00 Buckshot.
The velocity is 872 FPS.
The DEEPEST penetration in 2 inch boards was one inch, measured to the front of the shot.
The buckshot would not penetrate one inch plywood.

I had a 410 derringer. It kicked bad but was actually scary because the shot would sometimes bounce back at the shooter.

Wow! 872 from a 7 inch barrel. The shot velocity from a 3 inch barrel must be really low. I wonder if it is in the 450 to 550 fps range.

I can't find any velocity data and the derringer companies never mention anything about velocity and I have a feeling there is a reason.

I test fired a few .410 cartridges from a friend's derringer. Based on what they did to cardboard and the amount of bounceback off of wood, I'm guessing they produce something in the vicinity of wrist-rocket velocity.

I own several derringers and am completely comfortable with them. I do know that M2 is a derringer fan as well and have enjoyed his comments on the subject. The .410 round would make a mess of somebody. Might not penetrate very much, but pretty messy.

People are not wood. Try shooting a .410 round at bad breath distance into a brisket and see what it'll do. I have. I am sure that it would be quite a feat of superhuman toughness to still want to do harm to someone after taking one of those in the belly, chest or face.

I carry my derringer with .44 mag rounds in it. Hits 1100 fps with a 240 grain bullet.

Possibly. However, when we shoot somebody the goal is to stop him from doing us dire harm, not to mutilate him. People have been shot with far more effective rounds than the .410-in-a-derringer and continued to be a danger. With all the wide variety of revolvers and autoloaders that handle better cartridges for the purpose, I can see no percentage in carrying something as clumsy as a derringer in something as impotent as the .410.
