Anyone one of these? The ones I've seen vary in condition from excellent to downright ratty. Big 5 used to sell them for $50 but I haven't seen many around lately.

My Turk didn't headspace, so I used the action to build a custom rifle on. (An Oberndorf-built Mauser 98 action was well worth the $39 I paid for the rifle.)

The problem with M38 Turks is that they were arsenal reworked on a variety of actions, a few of which were Turk Model 1893's. Examine the rifle before you buy, and make sure you get its headspace checked so as to avoid getting a firsthand test of the Mauser's famous gas-handling qualities.

I bought mine from SOG back when they were going for 30 bucks. Piece of cake to bust clays at 100yrds. Biggest problem is finding a case that will hold it. Unfortunately mine has devoloped a crack in the stock that I haven't gotten around to fixing yet. I have heard that the stocks on the ones out there now are very fuzzy and chunky.

I've got two and I love them. Maybe I got lucky but both of mine headspace fine, and they both shoot well (at least they do now after some tlc). I've bougth mine over the net so I got lucky on quality, shouldnt be too hard to pick one up in person and be happy.

Here are some pics of mine:

And how the shoot at 100 yards (and I am not that good of a shot)

YMMV, and keep in mind that I put some work into getting mine to look like that.

Actually I think that is some nice wood on yours, Okiecruffler. One of mine is a bland walnut, and the other was the ugly yellow beech, which is why I played with it and ended up with the red mohogany finish it has now.

Oh, Tamara, not that I wish people to experiment with it but the gas system works just fine. I had a bad batch of turk surplus ammo (1941 headstamp) and I had it fail in both on of my turks and my K98k. In the turk I noticed it because smoke started pouring from around the action and a bit of oil splatered on my shooting glasses. The primer was completely blown, with only small shards to be found scattered around the action. No damage to the gun, and it still doesnt close on a no-go.

In the 98k I didnt even noticed it until I was cleaning the gun and then I saw this:

The picture is fuzzy, but the firing pin hole is completely covered by melted brass, which I can only assume it was from a blown primer. Interestingly enough, the gun continued to fire, though I have no idea how. This gun will also not close on a no-go.

Needless to say, I dispossed of all 1941 turk ammo I had left. The rest of it works fine, even though not as accurate as other brands (15 rounds at 100 yards with one of my turks):

Don't get me wrong, I get every old milsurp I buy checked for proper headspace: Mauser, Mosin, Arisaka, Schmidt-Rubin, et cetera. I'm not dogging on Turks at all.

(...and, hey, even if it doesn't headspace, it's just a great excuse to do this (http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=32322). :D )

Oh, I didnt think you had anything against them, I was just relating my experiences with the gas escape system. And stop torturing me with that rifle, you evil evil woman!

I've been meaning to build something like that, but somehow I always need money for different projects or silly things like mortgage or car brakes.

Superb rifle, btw. I vote for a good deep blue, but it wouldnt be tactical, so it wouldnt match the chamber.

Thanks, I'm kinda fond of the wood myself. It has alot of dark spots, but that just gives it character. She's in the shed right now all clamped down, hopefully we can start shooting her this weekend. Took the Yugo out today and burned up a bandolier of ammo, but that's a whole different story.
