Opinions sought on SAR-1 Romanian AK47

Hi folks. How's the quality of these rifles? I can get one for 319.00 out the door. Is it worth it? What about durability and accuracy?
Also, I presume steel cased ammo is fine to use with this gun?
And, what are the best quality 30 round mags for the AK47?
Thanks for any help.

On the quality scale I'd give them an average rating. Nothing to write home about but well built enough to give you years of shooting pleasure.
There's a lot you can do to make them look better if you feel the need to do so, check out K-var (http://www.k-varcorp.com/)
They'll stand up to just about anything you can do to them, they're AKs after all. Built to take a beating. As far as accuracy goes, an SAR will likely give you 3 to 6 inch groups at 100 yards. Depends on your rifle and skill. If you think that's terrible, remember it's an AK and then make a circle with your thumbs and index fingers...hold that over your chest. :D Even a 6 inch group will get the job done.
The AK was designed for use with steel cased ammo.
Any of the Eastern Euro steel mags will give you a lifetime of service. They're built like tanks and will last a LONG time. Keep them lightly oiled to prevent rust. I'm not a big fan of the plastic mags for the Ak, but that's just personal preference; lots of people use them and like them fine.

Buy it! You won't be sorry. The AK is a proven design and you can't find a centerfire semi-auto cheaper to shoot than a 7.62x39 AK. The ammo is almost as cheap as rimfire. AK is the only semi-auto I own.

I LOVE my SAR-1! I bought 2 30-round mags (East German) from KY IMPORTS. The first is a bit tight and slightly difficult to get inserted. The second is a bit loose. It seems ok but will SLIGHTLY rock back and forth when inserted.
Everyone should have at least one AK designed gun! The SAR-1 is a great place to start - if not to end!

Make sure front sight & gas tube aren't canted, work the action back & forth a couple of times to make sure the piston is aligned then buy it. Broker another mag or two at that price or some ammo. Not a bad price but for 3 bills I got a 10, 30 and 40 rnd mag with mine. Some change furn, I like the 3rd world look on mine. It won't ever let you down.

The United States, spent millions to find a pen that could write in space.
That being said, Russians used a pencial.
AK's, pretty much the same, it gets the job done, without costing you your life savings.:D
BUY IT.

I picked up one a week ago. That is a good price. I shelled out about $40 more - but I like my local dealer and pay a bit more for his services. The newer SAR-1s are much better than when they first came out. The fit and finish on mine is pretty good, cept for them dang ugly wood stocks. Both the front site and gas tube are dead on straight. Some of them have trigger slap, easily corrected by a new trigger assembly or some smith work.
Unfortunately I have not had a chance to shoot it yet. I love my AR-15 but you do have to keep her clean. I bought the AK as a knockaround gun. I figure I can take care of it a whole let better than the skinnies in Somalia, and theirs seemed to work pretty good in the Mog.
But mostly, I just wanted an AK, and the Romanian seemed a good reasonable place to start.
If you buy it let us know how it shoots.

I own the SAR 1 and a WASR 10(hi-cap), they both work super. Like has already been said finish is not real good but it does the job. Mine are very accurate and dependable. At that price you can afford to fix them up a bit, Ive a muzzle brake and a camo stock(WASR) on one and it looks great. The wood on the WASR was terrible but the wood on the SAR was real nice, there selling them now with laminated stocks that look real nice. Go for it. I hope these arent to big.

Its true that the newer the SAR the better it is finished. I have about 4k through mine and I clean it every time I open a new case. It has never missed a beat. You might want to invest in a Red Star trigger group as the stock trigger group tends to develop trigger slap after a while. All in all, this is the best bargain on the AK market.

I got an SAR-1 a few weeks ago. After putting it through a little 1,000 round workout up at my cabin, I give it two thumbs up. I also got a bunch of the Bulgarian 30-round waffle magazines for it, they are light, supposedly tough, won't rust, and worked flawlessly. My rifle really liked the cheap Wolf ammo too!! $319.00 is the going rate here for one of the 2003 model "laminated stock" SAR's. I would (and probably will) buy another one.

This is the only warning you will receive!:fire:
Say after me; NEVER EVER bad mounth an AR15 Type weapon! It is still possible in this day and age to be burned at the stake:what: Martin Luther is dead, I hope you recant your "mis-understanding" that the AR needs cleaning more often than a septic tank. Go my son and wash your mouth out with soap!
Same thing will happen if you take the name of the M1A/M14 in vain! It will just be a smaller fire.
Ak type weapons are just fine for the "masses" that can't afford an AR15.

My AK has never seen a jam yet. Thousands of rounds, never a hitch. It hits what I want to when I want to. Mags are cheap and last forever. Ammo is cheap. The most fun I've ever had in a semi-auto. Yes, this is the rifle for the masses. It was intended to be so. A rifle designed to go 30,000 before a part failure in an era where if you didn't deliver on that spec, they just shot you and started over. I love my AK and it was the best money I ever spent. I can shoot it all day. And still have lots of cash leftover.

love mine, I added the Red Star Arms adjustable trigger group, Choate stock, and Kobra Red dot. It eats Wolf ammo all the time :).

It is a weapon designed by the nation that was America's greatest opponent of all time.
It is used by countless terrorist groups and third-world countries around the world.
It is banned in three (if not more) states.
What I get from these facts:
It is strongly made, not easily damaged and simple to repair.
Unheard-of reliability, and takes cheap ammo.
Liberals are silly to ban such a well-made tool.
Downsides? Trigger slap hurts like hell, and it's annoying too...but easy to fix if you go to www.redstararms.com or, if you're a do-it-yourselfer type, go to linx310.nothingbutguns.com for a tutorial.
Bottom line?
Get it. I love mine:D

My SAR-1 has a trigger that is fine. Even my Dad (who is a rifle "expert") said that my trigger "Isn't all that bad". - shocked me. I bought it about a month ago.

I've had my SAR less than a month and it's already my favorite rifle (sorry, M39 and mini-14!) Wood looks nice, trigger is absolutely slap-free and much smoother than my mini-14's, magazines are built like tanks and work without a hitch, and it uses some of the least expensive centerfire rifle ammo there is. When I have a bit more experience with the rifle, I'll benchrest it with some Lapua FMJ to see how well it groups.
Get one! $319 isn't a bad price at all; prices around here appear to be creeping up since Century announced they aren't importing any more SAR's. I don't think I could mailorder one that cheap, given FFL fees and shipping, and if you buy it from a store you at least get to look it over first.

They're a lot of fun and cheap as heck to shoot. Very reliable. Extra mags are very inexpensive. Everyone should own one or ten. Grab it and don't look back.

They aren't pretty, but they tend to work okay.
Which, when you think about it, is a pretty fair thumbnail sketch of any AK ever made. ;)

They aren't pretty
Certainly not in the traditional sense (at least that typified by the hunting-rifle aesthetic), but a well-finished AK is visually pleasing nonetheless. It grows on you.
