I've been "told" that when moving, federal law allows a gun owner to transport his firearms from one location to another. Can anyone point me to that actual law / regulation on the web somewhere.

Check www.packing.org. You will usually be safe if the gun is unloaded, fully enclosed in a case specifically made for firearms, separate from its ammunition, and in a part of the vehicle not accessible from the passenger compartment.

You can check the laws, state by state. Look for gun friendly peaceable journey laws, I think.

This would be covered under the Firearms Owners' Protection Act (FOPA). See 18 U.S.C. ยง 921 HERE (http://uscode.house.gov/uscode-cgi/fastweb.exe?getdoc+uscview+t17t20+521+1++%28%29%20%20AND%20%28%2818%29%20ADJ%20USC%29%3ACITE%20AND%20%28USC%20w%2F10%20%28921%29%29%3ACITE%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20)

A good writeup on the Act is HERE (http://www.guncite.com/journals/hardfopa.html) and Eugene Volokh (http://www.law.ucla.edu/faculty/volokh) has an excellent page HERE (http://www1.law.ucla.edu/~volokh/2amteach/sources.htm#26) that details the Act.
