Ok which do we prefer bullseye type targets or sillouettes? Figure a human sillouette may be useful for defensive practice, but if shot placement is really the be all end all the wouldn't using bullseye targets be more practical? Thoughts?

Can't use human-shaped targets over here, so it's bullseye for me. Stupid German laws...

Yes, no human silhouettes allowed. :(

But oval shaped targets are almost as good. ;)

I use bullseye targets mostly for testing loads and new guns. For

practice, I use sillouettes. Bullseye targets don't teach you shot

placement. With a sillouette target you can aim for the heart / head / pelvis.

Bullseye's just help teach you how to group. A well rounded program will

include both types along with reactionary targets and descision making

targets (use with a friend). Then go compete in the gun game of your

choice to learn to shoot under some pressure and learn from others.

Enjoy!

The head portion of a sillouette target makes a dandy bullseye!!

I use self-stick black dots for shooting groups and IDPA silhouettes for all practical practice. I'm at the point with practical where most of my hits are "too good" and I have to work on speed. 3/4" black dot on heavy white paper works fine out to 200 yards for precision.

Sillouette. IPSC to be specific.

Lately I've been using a bullseye target w/ 9 small targets on a page....what can I say, I'm CHEAP :D Since shot placement is the objective, I can put alot of holes on the on target. Besides, I was taught aim small, miss small. I can focus beter on the smaller target :)

As STEVE M so correctly pointed out, you really need both. I do a standard drill on silhouette targets drawing out of the holster against a timer. This is great for defensive handgun practice, but too much of this leads to problems with fine trigger control and good sight picture. So, you also need to spend time on a bullseye target working on good marksmanship skills. I enjoy them both. On the silhouette, the balance between speed and accuracy is with speed. On the bullseye, you are focused on pure accuracy. Both are valuable skills and you need both to be a really good handgunner. I like to challenge myself on the range. If I find that I am shooting real tight groups on the silhouette, I know I need to shoot faster. If I can make five perfect head shots at speed, then I need to explore my limits on how far away I can still make perfect head shots. You need to analyze your shots to see what you are doing wrong. Are you too agressive on the trigger ? If so, you need to slow down and make good hits etc. This can only be achieved by shooting at some kind of target that clearly shows your shot placement.

Back in the first and second world war the kill ratio for each soilder was very low in the european theater. There were a select few who had many under their those were usually the old salties. The Army and DoD wanted to know why the men were not taking as many men as they should have. Well they came down to in boot camp they were using bullseye targets strictly. So by vietnam they had intergrated the human shaped targets. When they did another evaluation they had noticed a, I think 70% increase of men using thier rifles in combat on their enemy. I got this information from Col. David Grossman on Killology.

I figure that if I am carrying my pistol for defensive shooting the bullseye is not going to do me much good at all. I still use the bullseye for my plinking and with a rifle I can chew the target up. However with a pistol, my carry, I cant shoot the bullseye for jack squat. I mean could not hit a barn inside the dang thing. So I train and shoot at what my target is going to be.

Both work, but paper plates are cheap :)... IDPA with shirts are great for learning. Pins and poppers are good too.

I use blank 8 1/2 x 11 paper. Shoot the middle. From a distance , just hit the paper.lol

With a little imagination a bull's-eye target can resemble just
about anything you choose. If you can hit the x-ring why can't
you hit an eye socket or the left ventricle?

I pretty much only use IDPA targets. Brown is more preferable to white.

I too am cheap. I found that a file folder cut in half makes 2 great targets for a low price. The 8-1/2 X 11 is just darn near the size of the 8 ring on a B27 target, and if you draw a 2X3 inch oval in the center, it makes an acceptable 10 ring. Any hit on the folder at 25 yds. is a body hit and the bullseye , well lights out for sure.

Skunk- lol! Really its because I don't want to get used to flash sight pictures on things that are unnaturally colored, like white targets.
