Colt Dectective Special

I just purchased this today for CCW. Not knowing much about Colt's, I bought it strickly on price and visible condition. The asking price was $230. I purchased it for $210 plus tax. The salesman threw in a HKS speedloader for nothing extra. It looks like it has never been fired. According to the serial number it was manufactured in 1935-1936 which makes it far older than I thought. It came with the cheap plastic grips which I plan to quickly change out as soon as I can find something appropriate. No box.
I bought this for CCW and the occasional back up pistol shoot. My sense is that I found a good deal. Any thoughts on value?

I wont quote exact price but from what I found when looking for one you got it at about half price
I ended up with a Cobra, sadly for free
I think it was SportsmanGuided that had D frame original grips recently
Should be not more than $20 for originals

I could be wrong but it looks as if it might have been re-finished, if so, good job....and I've never seen grips on a DS fit like that...still, you got a killer deal and some new wood will dress that it right up.

The early Detective Special's were built on Police Positive Special frames, and had true square butts. The ones now on it are early post-war stocks - rounded at the bottom.
You got an exceptional price considering that the revolver has a collector's as well as a user's value. However when you go looking for stocks, remember you need pre-war or early post-war ones for a Police Positive Special, not a Detective Special.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. It looks like I am in the market for some old Police Positive grips (or a modern wood alternative). I checked ebay, gunbroker, and Sportsman's Guide (as suggested above) and no luck. Any additional suggestions?

Brownells, or Numrich.
Quite a deal.

Very good deal from what I have seen. I just picked up a newer generation DS and thought that I got a good deal at $318.50.

You need a set of square bottom std Police Positive grips for your DS -2nd (G-type) issue or later. Those grips are from the late 40's (post-war) to early 50's for a round butt. PM me if you don't wanna keep them.

I am green with envy. I do not know if the grips on my Colt Police Positive below would be correct (ask Fuff), but you can find repops of them at NC Ordnance (http://www.gungrip.com/) or Vintage Gun Grips (http://www.vintagegungrips.com/).

First Series is 1927 through 1946.
Second Series is 1947 to 1972.

By the time the first Detective Specials came along (1927) Colt was using checkered walnut stocks with the nickeled "Pony" trademark logos. But the stocks you show will work fine, and are not expensive.
The Police Positive model also had a short 2" barreled version called the Bankers Special, that was popular with the U.S. Post Office. Always wanted one, but it never came along. I may have to make one up, as Detective Special "pencil" barrels will fit the frame just fine...

Man you did great on that pistol. The Colt Detective Specials are great little pistols.
I have one (though mine is 1972 vintage and I paid much more than you did) and she is a good one.

I ran 100 rounds through it tonight. It shoots well and even though my kunuckles touch the backside of the trigger guard, I suffered no ill beating at all. I could have shot another hundred rounds, alas, my 1/2 hour was up.

Thief! :neener:
If that gun were at one of the gun shows or in the Cabela's gun room out here, it would have about an $800 price tag on it.

Great News!!! I ordered a set of Walnut with diamond pattern grips from Numerich. I almost forgot to order the replacement screws. Entire order came to less than $22. I will post updated pics in about 1 week.

The Numrich walnut grips were too small, even though the catalogue stated they would fit a Police Positive. I did find a set made in Indonesia...
