I finally got a chance to head back to my favorite little gun store where I was looking at this Mossberg a couple of weeks ago. To my surprise, it was still on the rack. I muddled around for a bit, but finally got sick of the indecision and just threw the credit card down.

I got the shotgun for about $230 and he cut the tax off for me. I also got a 50-round box of Federal 2 3/4 buckshot for $25, a box of slugs, and a free little bondolier-pouch thingy (probably held stripper clips, no idea what the original use is). Each compartment of the thingy holds 5 shotshells perfectly!

I really love the Mossberg, it's as light as I can imagine a pump gun ever being. It will make a great camp gun, which is what I bought it for. I also found out that it's a 5 shot magazine tube, instead of 4 like I thought.

This thing will not be altered in anyway, except to add a sling. No sidesaddles, no lights, no ghost rings. Just pure, lightweight, simple functionality and reliability.

More pics of hotness:

Versus much heavier 870, temporarily lacking surefire forend:

Thanks for looking-

Nice! I have the same thing just in wood form. Like you said, no gadgets, just 18" barrel.

Congrats on the purchase.
I have practically the same thing but I added ghost ring sights and painted it camo to use as a deer gun. You'll love it.

Do you really think the 870 weighs more?
I have an 870 and don't think there's a noticable difference.

I have a Mossberg 500 and my son has a Remington 870, the Remington 870 definitely weighs more.

I had an 870 previous to the Mossy 500 I just bought. I bought the SP model with the 20" barrel and 7 shot tube. The 870 weighs more. But the thing Inoticed is that I shoot the Mossy a lot better.

I have an 18.5 inch Mossy too. Even though I am an 870 fan through and through, that Mossy sees a lot of use. As you say very light weight.

I did purchase a 18.5" Heavy Wall Accuchoke LE barrel from havlinsales.com though. That gives me choke options in the short barrel. I then swapped my cyl bore barrel to a member here for a 28" barrel so I can use the same gun for dove hunting if I want.

Both the Remington 870 and Mossberg 500 are fine shotguns. They are like Chevy and Ford, both are good and will do the job and it comes down to which you like better.

I like the Mossberg 500 better than the Remington 870 for mainly one reason, it feels good in my hands. (I like the position of the safety and release too) I shoot both well but like shooting the 500 more.
