I have heard many people mention the year long hog hunting down here in Florida, but I can't seem to be able to find much information on the subject.
Basically I'd like to be educated on the matter, whatever you can think of that you deem as useful information.

Thanks in advance!

My brother-in-law did a Florida hog hunt once, and described it pretty much like this:

He showed up at this guy's place; got taken out in a Jeep, drove around in a swamp until they jumped a hog; shot the hog, left.

Total time: about 45 minutes.

That's just one data point and is hearsay, so take it for what it's worth.

There are a couple of ranches around Okeechobee that have hunts. Get ahold of Bubba Helton at Garrard's Tackle. 863-763-3416. He's usually in after 9 am.

Having talked to Bubba at length, I've figured out there are lots of types of hunts. Quite common is as above. They've already caught some hogs out on the ranches and have them in semi-enclosed areas, maybe a couple of hundred acres. They'll have the hog penned up for 2-3 days and not feed it. When you're ready for the "hunt", they put the hog out with some feed on the ground. You drive around and suddenly, there's a hog. Bang. Hunt over.

It's not uncommon for the services to buy boars at the local auction barn and put them out. I had a neighbor that used to do this for a living.

It depends on the type of hunt. If it's a stalk through saw palmetto and scrub oak, it will be an adrenaline rush whether you get one or not. I recommend trying it with a nice solid single action chambered in something ending in the word Magnum.

If they are hunting with dogs and jeeps/atvs, it's not very sporting, in my opinion. I don't think it's "hunting" either, at that point.

Hogs can be hunted year round in Florida because in the eyes of the law, all pigs are domestic animals and are the private property of the landowner. Well, the law may say a feral hog is a domestic animal. However, if you've ever been charged by several hundred pounds of tusked razorback in the very close quarters of scrub bush - they don't seem real domestic any more. Yum, pork.

Is there any sort of place around the Daytona Beach area where I could try this out?
Maybe Ocala?

Guess you don't like my idea of Okeechobee. Geez, all you've got to do is go to Yee Haw junction, turn south on 441, and go about 40 miles. On the way, stop for a cold one at the Desert Inn in Yehhaw.

If that doesn't work, get a copy of Boar Hunter Magazine. There are lots of guys listed in it.

"With landowners' permission, wild hogs may be taken year-round with no bag limits, size limits, or licenses required." This is from the current Florida Hunting regs, picked up at a local Walmarts. It means that if you own the land, you and your guests may take the hogs upon it when you wish. They're yours. Kill 'em!
I recently saw a photo a friend of mine took at a "Hunting Farm" in or around Tampa. He shot some African antelope for a fee, and could have shot an American Bison for some G-d awful amount of money, too. As they were cruising around one afternoon, a bison approached the truck, and Steve had a pic taken of him self and the bison, who was practically into the window of the car. Steve posed with a Magnum pistol stuck in the animal's ear, a grin on Steve's face, and no recognition on the bull's face.
Is that hunting?
I've seen "Boar Hunter's Mag" at Books-A-Million.

a side note on the above poster, hogs on private land may be hunted year round but not on public land. public land hogs are conisdered wild game and must be taken while in season and you have to have a hunting license.

private land they are considered the land owners livestock so that is why there is no limit, season or licnesing for them.
