How many own just a handful of guns?
Monkeyleg
July 27, 2003, 05:56 PM
I keep reading posts from THR members who have dozens, if not hundreds, of guns. I have just seven, although if my gunshop-owner friend sees fit to reward me for doing his website, I'll have eight. With the exception of one revolver, they're all in the $700 to $1500 price range, and anything I want right now is in that range as well.
I'd love to buy more, but there are more pressing items: get the chimney rebuilt; remodel the bathroom...you get the idea.
So, who here has fewer guns than they do fingers?

I own 3 pistols and my wife has a shotgun (she used to hunt with her dad). I just sold one of the 3 pistols and bought an AR-15.
I've got a long list of guns I want, so maybe someday I'll have a huge collection like Monkeyleg :p

I have one. I just bought it Friday, and I am going to take it apart and clean it Monday. I doubt I will get to shoot it for a couple of weeks though, as I plan on refinishing the stock before I do anything.

Monkeyleg, I have but only 17 and all are not within the range that your's are.
With the C&R (which already has given me three more to add up to 17), I foresee alot of others.
I don't think the idea is "how many" but what you want. I just like handguns and I want them all, from the cheap to the expensive. Others are more specific in their endeaver. I just like them all. I'm only 35 and if the laws don't change too much, I still have 35 more years (maybe) to get more.

We have eight handguns in our household. Five of them are mine; three belong to my wife.
I was up to twenty or so before I got laid off last year, and I had to condense the collection since then. I have all the basics covered, though, so this is probably the low watermark.

If all the long guns had slings and the pistols were encased I could carry them all. Only have about 20 or so. :D Hauling ammo for them would be a problem
Guess that would be two handfuls.

I only have a handful at any given time. I'm constantly buying, selling and trading. Sometimes I'll only own a gun for a month before I get rid of it. Sometimes I just want to see what one is like and if it isn't what I consider "fun" or "useful" then I trade it. Right now I'm down to 3, but that'll change in a week or so when I decide to buy another. I've had as many as 15 and as few as 1 so my inventory flows like the river.

In total, I've owned almost 20 firearms, but currently I'm at 8. I feel horrible if I can't shoot the ones that own, at least once a year. Besides my gunlocker says it will only hold 10 firearms, so that's pretty much my limit. However, I've had at least 8 long guns(3 of which were scoped), and 8 pistols in it at one point in time.

Dick, I have a few around, just enough to let them cool off between use. My main objective is to reload a fair amount of ordnance for the arms. I have accomplished that. KISS. 9mm 5.56 308 and 30-30 for fun, and a little shotshell in the mix as well. Most all arms are duplicate and use the same ammo as well.---------Chainsaw

Had the revolver 442 which I sold and used the money to do custom work on my Beretta compacts -- the Inox model is now my father's, but I bought a 686P 4" from S&W and so it's down to two. Hoping to add to it but I need a J.O.B. first.....;)

I guess it depends on how much interest and money you have .
If you start collecting in your 20's (like me) ,by the time you are 48 (like me )you might collect 40 pieces of junk ,then get divorced , then recover and build up a better (smaller) collection ,It all depends .
If you hit the lotto and have a place to store the arsenal you can have them all ! or maybe you might find boats more exciting ??
Ill trade maybe a FEW guns for a good woman ......
Hey , its all part of life , it comes and goes ....If you want 300 guns then GO FOR IT !
As Senator Phil Graham from Texas said : " I have all the guns that I need but not as many as I want " .
BYW. 'Bulldozer' : That quote was from Hartford Ct's own Sam Clemens (Mark Twain).

I just recently thinned my collection in Half, selling 15 firearms in the last 6 months.
once you have too many it takes some of the fun out because you learn no gun well, sure general knowledge is good but back when I only owned 1 glock I shot that gun better then I do now.

I am 25 and own 13 guns. I bought my first gun when I was 12 it was a Ruger 10-22. I decided that to keep my collection from getting out of hand I decided to make a list of all of the guns I would need to have a well rounded collection. The only problem is when I made up the whole list I had another 28 guns to buy. I hope my wife doesn't find the list she will be pissed

Two....a .380 and a .40.
Looking at a Ruger 10/22 and a few others.
I don't want to freak the wife out too much, so I'll probably self impose a limit of five or so at a time.
The only time you can have too many is when you can't store them properly.

For some reason I've become annoyed with guns that don't have a specific role in my life so I've rationalized them down. Currently I have:
Handguns:
- Kimber Classic for IDPA and under the mattress.
- Colt Officer's for CCW
- Ruger MKII for plinking
Rifles:
- Winchester Model 70 .30-06 for hunting
- Ruger 10/22 for plinking & hunting
- Bushmaster AR15 for fun and to make sure I own one
- Century FAL for the same reasons as the AR
Shotgun:
- Mossberg 500 w/3 barrels (bird, slug, 18" cylinder choke)
Others:
- Win 94 in 32Spl for sentimental reasons
- Eastfield pump 12ga for sentimental reasons
- Ishapore pseudo-scout that I don't really have a use for (dislike the trigger) but it ain't worth getting rid of.
I'll be getting a Titanium .357 this year for hiking/hunting and am giving SERIOUS consideration to getting rid of the Model 70 in favor of a Browning BLR. Grew up in New England using a Model 94 and have realized I'm just not crazy about bolt actions. Other than that I don't think I need much else.

To me guns are like motorcycles.
There isn't a limit on how many one should own.
And if I could afford it. I'd own one of every single one ever made :)
Right now the collection is at 3 handguns, 1 rifle and 2 motorcycles. I have a looooong way to go.
One day I'll open the National Firearm / Motorcycle Archival Museum :)

Another "more guns than fingers" guy here, with about half getting used regularly. All are shooters, though, and if it goes too long without getting shot, it gets replaced. It's a pretty stable collection at this point, but ... I always seem to "need" one more.:p

I'm on a quest to have one ideal firearm in each class. I'm currently out for an ideal mouse gun, and when I have more $$ I'll be looking for an ideal Magnum (prob. an old CZ BRNO safari rifle in .375 H&H). Later on I'll probably want an ideal submachine gun and an ideal heavy machine gun (the M-2, of course). One ideal grenade launcher and an ideal recoilless rifle would also be good.

I try to keep my firearm collection at a minimum, but new ones keep showing up. I currently have 3 rifles, 1 shotgun and 3 handguns. Since I rent and move around alot, it is hard to manage a large number of firearms. In the future, as a homeowner, I plan to have a large healthy collection!

1 Handgun
4 Shotguns (one is for sale so hope to knock it down to 3 soon)
3 Rifles (2 of which are .22s)
=8
The only one I paid more than $225 for is the handgun (Kimber).
The long guns are the typical garden variety. Rem 870's, Rem Nylon66, Win 94, Marlin model 60. Mossy 395, and a cheap brazilian break action single shot 12.
I figure I have the bases almost covered. I need 3 more and I'll be done for a while. A .22 handgun for cheap plinking and two carry pieces. One for the Mrs. and one for me. Possibly Beretta 9000 and a Springfield XD.

I have two, one short and one long. If 3-gun gets to me like I expect it to, the collection will include a shotgun next year. Also the 9mm might be on its way to change to .40 for major in IPSC and the old one isn't worth much in the trade...
so from the current 2 I'll be up to max 4. Then I'll put my money on ammunition and reloading equipment and concentrate on using what I've got to the fullest.
