I have a model 19 with the serial number prefix 'BRC'. The Standad Catalog of Smith and Wesson shows a prefix of 'BRF' but not 'BRC'. What am I missing?

Is your 19 anything special, an odd barrel length, butt shape, perf. center gun or something? If so, it would likely fall between the last noted prefix sequence and that one. For example, I have a 629 that was a special order (thousands in total, but for one distributor), and it has a three digit code of ALD, which also isn't in the book, but it was produced the same year as the ALC codes.

Go to smith-wesson.com and send them an email asking about the prefix.

Not all the serial number or in your case alpha prefix designations are listed in the SCSW. It's a simple matter of imcomplete information; when the authors put together the data, they didn't have it all. Many people submit information that they have, to Jim and Richard for inclusion in their book, hense the long list of contributors listed in the first few pages of the book, take look you'll see what I mean. It's not that the book is bad or that information is intentionally omited; your prefix is just simply not listed. It's just one they didn't have. Even with all the blanks the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson is the best S&W reference book out there. You can by process of deduction make a SWAG at the date of your gun, you can call S&W and they will give you a rough idea or you can send your $30 to Roy Jinks S&W Historian with the appropreiate form and in about 6*8 weeks you'll get a letter telling you what you want to know.

Nothing special, just a 19-7 4" model. I did not realize that the Standard Catalog was not complete. Thanks.
