I saw a slip-on recoil pad on the Uncle Mike's site. Does that work? Do reciol pads, in general, work? Any recommendations? I'm new to shotgunning.
Thanks,
Einstein

ITs not a slip on pad, but I just purchased a large kickeez pad for my remington 870. It cuts recoil by more than half. On my 870, I just removed the old pad, and screwed on the new one, it took maybe five minutes. As far as slip on goes, Im looking at the pachymar deaccellator. I hear its not as recoil absorbant as the kickeez but it does ahve the advantage of being slip on.

Kickeez pads are a work of sheer genius. I highly reccomend it over any other pad, slip-on or otherwise.

Make sure you get that old Sportsman 48 checked out thoroughly by a competent gunsmith before you shoot it again. I had one that A/D'd through the floorboard of my truck when my brother slammed a shell home in the frazzlin' thing. He wet his pants and had to go back to the house.
He never did thank me for taking him bird hunting, either.

I bought a slip on at walmart for ~10$ as an impulse buy during an ammo stop and it makes a big difference.

Yes,a slip on pad will help,Einstein. A screw on pad, with good fit and form will help lots more.
The 101 series of threads I've written and some shotgun cognizant people here have contributed greatly to are designed to help beginners. You mayw ant ot check there.
All old shotguns should be checked out by a competent smith before firing.
