Hi, everyone I am looking to pick-up a 20 gauge for a squirrel/rabbit gun. I am a rifle shooter with limited shotgun experience and is wondering if a thumbhole/pistol grip type stock will work well on this gun (I perfer these type of stock on rifles). Also I am thinking a barrel length of around 20" since I hunt in pretty thick stuff - a good idea? Any help is greatly appreciated thanks.

Your hands are adaptable. They''ll adapt to a standard shotgun stock in short order.
The regular stock has changed little since the 1820s. Close to two centuries of refinement has pretty much made it as good as it can get.
Do try one out. You'll be pleased.
As for barrel length, when I get tangled up in brush, it's usually not my barrels. Anything less than 30" will work....

I like a thumbhole for punching paper, but a standard stock seems to work better for me when I'm hunting. I like a 26" for rabbits, and its pretty thick around here.

i tend to aggree that regular stock is better for shooting game like rabbits, since its most likely gonna be a flush on the run shot, much like game birds.
for squirrel, you can sit and wait for them like turkeys/deer, etc. lol i used a scoped turkey/deer shotgun setup for squirrels before :) that was fun.
I know have a AR-15 style stock on my 870 for deer, fox/coyote, and probly will keep it for the life of the gun i like it that much. i pretty much retired it from game birds and such, and will use other traditional shotguns for that.
I think a thumbhole could work well for bird/rabbit shooting tho. Use whatever your comfortable with.

Thumbhole 20 gauge with a 20" barrel? This is pretty basic, but it fits your criteria:

you can buy a 870 express in either gauge 12 or 20 and get a thumbhole buttstock and matching fore-end from boyd's gun stocks
trick is to buy a 20 gauge youth gun that has a 20-21 inch barrel and just put a full length stock on it. you can pick up youth guns for next to nothing used in great condition
thats what we did to my little brothers gun, and now its a sweet gun. light, compact but fits us both now that we are older
