People's Republic of Virginia?!?!?

Tangentially gun-related, but I thought you folks would get a kick out of it...
My raging liberal sister from Washington, DC visited for the weekend. During one of her political rants she mentioned "The People's Republic of Virginia," the same way we talk about the People's Republik of Kalifornia. I asked her what she meant by that, and she said, "Those people are CRAZY. They're REPUBLICANS, and they have GUNS!"
I nearly fell out of my chair.
Best,
Joe

What's she upset about? DC residents have guns, too.

I love it when the communists don't understand that a people's republic is a communist state...

It's not communism. It's just socialism operating temporarily with repression to weed out the reactionaries. ;) Afterwards, we'll all be happy, happy, happy in the Workers' Paralize. :)

A liberal hating Virginia? *sigh* That makes me feel so warm and fuzzy inside... we must be doing something right. :D

DC is a third world country. I have long felt we should build a wall around DC and keep them all in (and then fill it with water:evil: )

Let's see....DC has one of the highest murder rates in the nation, the highest taxes, the worst schools and spends more per student than any other state school system, has red light cameras on every corner, yet your sister still lives there. Who's calling who crazy?
And I really don't understand how she can think that a law-abiding citizen exercising his or her God-given rights qualifies VA as a People's Republic. Sounds like the all-too-typical liberal mushhead who doesn't take the time to think things through.

And if your sister thinks Northern VA is 'crazy,' tell her never to venture south of Woodbridge or west of Loudoun County. Northern VA has largely been transformed into a liberal nannystate just like DC. The rest of VA is much more conservative.
Out in the Valley where I live, it's like West Virginia.

Partisan has got it right.....anyone who thinks that the Northern Virginia area is too conservative hasn't been very far into the Commonwealth's lands beyond the beltway.
Having been born in Maryland and lived in Virginia by choice for 15 years, I can say that I've seen both sides of the coin and can't wait to get back to the I-81 corridor.
Regarding DC, we should just level it and start over. It is an utter embarrassment that the capital city is such as shambles.

"Northern VA has largely been transformed into a liberal nannystate just like DC."
NoVa's full of liberal bottomfeeders, there's no doubt about that, but it's pretty amazing how much the area has turned politically in the last 10 years.
At one point there wasn't a single Republican state rep or senator in Northern Virginia. Now there are a bunch.
In the last Presidential election?
George Bush WON Northern Virginia!
But only because that moron Ralph Nader siphoned off a ton of votes from Al Gore.

Living on the left side of VA north of Roanoke, I think I can safely say that the only liberals in my town are those associated with W&L...

Yeah, NOVA has tried like hell to be DC or MD. Fortunately there's still a bunch of clowns like me running around, voting conservative, carrying guns, and just pissing off liberals left and right.

Teufelhunden,
The Lexington area is indeed somewhat of an abnormality compared to the rest of Western Virginia. One would have thought that VMI may have balanced some of the brattiness coming from the W+L campus.
Lots of good places to shoot in that general part of the world....hope I get a chance ot get back down there to enjoy some of them
Cheers!

So Joe, would you be willing to show this thread to your sister? I'd love to know what her reaction is.

I cannot understand how your sister thinks. Her view is emotional and not based upon logic or facts. If banning guns was proved to greatly eliminate crime, I would reconsider my world view. The facts state otherwise. I imagine banning guns and gun sales will stop the occasional thug, but most will get their guns illegally, and the effects on the law-abiding will be far more severe.

By Joe's definition, his sister is a raging libera, Partisan.
That means that no one can understand the fractured thought processes and altruistic leaps that are made by those such as her.

Partisan Ranger nailed it. She *feels* scared by guns, therefore they're bad and no one should have them. Or at least not "regular" people. Facts and reason don't matter, just emotion.
And no, I'm not about to show her this thread. Her visits are already unpleasant enough:banghead:

People's Commonwealth of Virginia, actually.
One handgun per month, that's the law. Get's expensive buying 12 per year.
No concealed carry in church, unknown about open carry there.
No concealed carry in restaurants where alcohol is served, have to carry openly there instead.
Radar detectors illegal, and subject to seizure. Never saw one seize up, though.
Only one nipple exposed on the half topless state flag & seal.
Proud source of guns for the entire NJ/NY region.

Thanks to our well celebrated crook, Doug Wilder and his comic book scam.
Proud source of guns for the entire NJ/NY region.
That distinction first belonged to S.C. When bowed to NYC with their "Saturday Night Special" law it changed nothing in "THE CITY" so they then went looking for us (good ol' Doug proudly standing before legislature with a comic book in his hand to justify his facts on the 1-gun-a-month proposal).
Our pollution lands in Maryland.
But we are now the biggest importers of trash on the East Coast because of non-regulation and cheap prices. I guess NYC is calling it even for us supposedly to have sent them all of their gun problems by sending us all of their trash ladden with crack needles and pipes.
I love it here, but we have had our share of the idiots, and Doug fit right in with the imported Northen Va crowd.

Both sides of my family have been here since the mid-1700s and I think our conservatives are too liberal.
Speaking of Lexington, I drove up to Stuarts Draft this morning to visit with my folks and spent a few hours at the range on our way to have lunch in Lexington. My mother takes a book and reads in the car for a couple of hours while we shoot. The range is on the side of a small valley and there's plenty of shade. Must be nice to be retired and so relaxed. And, yes, she has her own hearing protection.

Va is pretty liberal compared to us barbarians in the waste lands. I was driving through VA last year and I saw a bunch of signs along the hi-way that read something like "If you are caught with a handgun, you will go to jail for 15 years" or something like that. Does anyone know what I am talking about? They are huge and they are along the main hi-ways. What's up with that?

Firestar,
I think that you are referring to "Project Exile". I'm far from the most knowledgeable of experts on firearms legislation, but as I understand it this law was aimed straight at felons who had possession of a firearm. Since felons are prohibited from even touching a firearm, the point was that they were going to throw the proverbial book at those who broke this law.
According to my latest NRA rag, this is a "good" (I use the term very cautiously) law aimed at the BG's rather than a prohibition type law aimed at the guys in the white hats. It was started by a DA in Richmond....the gun crimes apparently went down tremendously after this was enacted.

JohnBT,
Stuarts Draft, huh? Did you live in the Stuarts Draft or Riverheads district?
Where did you go shooting up there? My in-laws are in Waynesboro and I'm always looking for a way to get some time away from the house when we visit;) A trip to a range would be a good thing while down there.
