Colt Python; what's it worth?

I'm thinking about picking this little beauty up...

Some slight wear but the seller is rating at 90-95% and claims he hasn't shot it while he's owned it. I believe him.

It's selling for $1200. I'm new to the Python arena but I'm eager to learn. Does it appear original? The only pics I could find to compare it to had blue trigger and hammer on blue guns and stainless trigger and hammer with stainless guns...so I'm not sure about that. Also, the screw on the left side isn't buggered up...that's a good sign.

What do you think?

As for the price, if it's original, i think it's maybe on the high side of the normal range, but not totally out of line with the prices lately.
I'd post the same thread over at http://www.coltforum.com/forums/postlist.php?Cat=0&Board=UBB7
There are several active colt experts who can tell you more about its originality and what to look for during an inspection.

First thing that I see wrong is that someone raped the original wood stocks/grips off the gun and it's going to take $150-$200 just to make that factory correct.

It looks to be that your Python also has the optional Ellaison rear sight and Patridge front sight. That was a factory option and your Python could have came custom tuned from the factory. That would be a bonus to the price.

It does look funny with a polished trigger.
Not to say Colt never did it like that, but almost all the blued guns have blued triggers and the hammer is polished with just the upper edge being blued. See below.

I note you are in Korea. I'm not sure about the prices there. At gun shows and gun counters around here, I would expect this Python to change hands for around $800-$1000.

I agree the polished trigger is likely not factory. Hopefully the seller still has the original grips. Between the grip change, polished trigger and Patridge front sight, I wonder if this one has had any action work done.

Here's a few more.........

royal blue is a desirable finish but aftermarket inards (trigger & what else on the inside???) itll do good to bring a hi shooter price from me 600$ to 850$

pachmyer presentation grips???????
addition : a question to ask is whos been working on it or who tuned it?????????

IMO $1200 is too much for that Python. $800 - $900 tops.

The sideplate has been removed as it is not seated into the frame as it should. In your pictures, the sideplate is raised and not fitting flush with the frame. It could be that the plate just needs to be pushed further into the frame, or the edges of the sideplate or frame might be buggered from prying the plate out of the frame.

Well, I don't have much of an option as it's a Python in CA....you don't see them that often...and I'm quited excited that I can do a FTF transfer on it.

I examined it today and the sideplate appears to be seated properly. Grips are incorrect but I was planning on replacing them anyway. The sideplate screw is a bit buggered up and the trigger is definitely polished to a high luster. Upgraded Elliason sights are present. Bluing was thin on the muzzle but not overly so. Action was spotless and the barrel actually had some dust in it so I can probably assume that it hasn't been shot much lately.

The only thing that bothers me is the trigger...I would have preferred that the internals weren't adjusted but the trigger pull was smooth and crisp.

Range report to follow...

Shot it on Friday night and put 100 rounds through her. No problems to report. Sights are set up for a six o'clock hold which is perfect. Ammo consisted of Rem 130 gr. and Speer Lawman 150 gr. The gun preferred the Remington loads by far.

I shot it again yesterday at the outdoor range for groups at 25 yards and could cover them with my palm. My only qualm was using the Lawman ammo. I'm picking up some handloads today....real wadcutters over some WW 231. I'll re-test with the wadcutter this week. I'm dying to get my load equipment out of storage!

Lastly, ignore the comments and the flyer...I'm playing catch up on a bullseye league and I'm working the intimidation angle. ;) ;)

By looking at the age of the box and owners manual it apparently has had the original wood grips replaced at some time with a set of rubber grips. They are nicer for shooting but I personally prefer the looks of the original woods. What is the serial number?

Price seems kind of high; I'm thinking more around $850 to $1,000. Certainly the accuracy potential is there; a little more fine tuning with the right load and you'll be right on the money. If it's what you want, and you're alright with the mods, then go for it.
