Flying with Pepper Spray to CA?

Two questions. Is it legal to pack pepper spray in your check-in luggage on domestic flights and is it legal to carry pepper spray in California? Thanks for any insights.

Federal law does not allow carrying any type of tear gas (or pepper spray) on airplanes or in the security areas of an airport. They are also prohibited on aircraft because the drop in air pressure can cause the pepper spray canisters to explode. For the same reason, pepper sprays can not be shipped by air.

As far as calif....I have no clue its a messed up state..IMO.

Mace/Pepper Spray - One 118 ml or 4 Fl. oz. container of mace or pepper spray is permitted in checked baggage provided it is equipped with a safety mechanism to prevent accidental discharge. For more information visit, click on Passengers, then Preparing to Fly.

Seems to depend on the airline. Example:

Delta: No

Airtran: Yes, in accordance with TSA policy

I have no idea if legal or not in California. Probably not, but that's just a guess.
Edit: Correction--Looks like legal in CA, but there are lots of hoops, (2.5oz. or less, must have CA approved packaging, etc).

You can buy pepper spray no problem here in California - I know it's amazing, but true. At one time, you had to take a class and get a license, but not now. Probably easier just to pick up a can here, then let a friend or relative hold onto it for you. You could even mail (UPS?) it back to yourself.

I agree with what wdlsguy said. I actually flew down to LAX with a 2.0 oz of pepper spray in my check-in luggage. I also carried it with me everywhere I went, even a Padres game down in San Diego, no one gave me hassles for it. At first when I was looking into flying down to LAX, I called up the Airlines, Southwest, and said that I was reading that you can. The woman on the phone said with an annoyed voice, "Uh, I don't think so!" Then I said that I read something on their website that now you can. She looked it up and said, "Hmmm, I guess things have changed. TSA has changed that." So when I went to the airport, I had the regulations printed up with the defense sprays part highlighted with marker taped to the original packaging that the pepper spray came with, with the bottle inside it so there would be no way they could say that it doesn't have a safety device on it preventing it from accidentally going off. I watched them put it through the X-ray before they put it in the bottom of the plane or whatever they do, and they said nothing about it. I also didn't say that I had pepper spray when I gave it to them, that's why I had that thing taped on it just in case.
