No longer a Virgin

All,

I finally managed to get my first deer kill yesterday. I had been completely unsuccessful every other time I had been out this season so this occassion means a lot to me. I had been invited by a good friend to hunt on his lease in Loudon County, one of three counties in VA that has an extended deer season.

He set me up in a ladder stand no more than 50 yards from his truck. He stated he had killed two bucks from that stand this season, and looking at the amount of tracks, rubs, and other things I agreed to stay there. He went back to his truck and started getting his gear together along with another friend of mine. I was halfway up the ladder stand when I hear rustling coming from behind me. Two deer were sprinting through the thick undergrowth and into the partial field that I was overlooking. Cursing, I tried to turn around but I wasn't able to get situated halfway up a ladder stand.

I start climbing again, this time a little slower. I hear a rustling again, and I see what must be 25 deer coming through the same area that the first two had passed through. So, I anchored myself on the stand with my left arm, and managed to get my rifle up and resting on the arm that was anchored to the stand. I am halfway turned around when I manage to get a doe in my crosshairs, jumping and weaving all the while. I squeezed the trigger, saw the round hit, she staggered another 10 yards and dropped to the ground dead. Later examination shows I shot just above the right shoulder, with the round puncturing the heart and lungs and exiting just below the now broken left shoulder. It was only a 40 yard shot or so, but I was hanging from a ladder stand shooting offhand at a target jumping and zigzagging. I am still wondering how I managed to do that.

My friends were shouting at this point at the large number of deer that were crossing the road in front of the trucks, and the fact that they heard a rifle shot not 5 minutes after I had left. My friend who set me up comes running down the path and asks if I hit anything. I shout for him to look to his right. He did, and it was right at his feet to the right of him in a pile of thick stuff. We were amazed.

My friend showed me how to gut a deer and I will be honest, I almost lost my lunch. The blood coming out felt HOT, definitely something odd that I never would have thought of. Dragging it out was even easier since she had run in the direction of the trucks. It was maybe 20 yards of dragging to put her in the truck.

Both still hadn't loaded their rifles and one guy had his stand still in his truck.

I was about ready to write this season off and get ready for next season. Now, I am trying to figure out how to put potentially 40 pounds of Venison in the freezer. :what:

I consider this a good problem to have.

The bloody picture below is what a .30-06 Remington Core Lokt 150 grain JSP round will do to a deer at 40 yards. I am still amazed at the Exit Wound. :what:

Congratulations! First deer I harvested, Dad left me to "do the honors," and wandered off to get the Jeep. When he came down the ridge, he asked why it was taking me so long to drag the deer up the hill. "These things don't drag easy!", I replied. Dad grabbed it by the front-end & headed off. I was dragging it backwards . . . kids ain't very bright & I've not improved on that much, over the years.

Thanks everyone, this was my 13th time out this season. I only had shots on deer 4 previous times and that was during the archery season.

Very good! Closer shots are not always easier ones. The first deer you clean is the hardest. I almost lost it on my first one-and now, 9 years later, I am guiding and cleaning game for a living(at least for the season)

Going squirrel hunting soon too. What should I expect?

Way to go. That broke the ice, those deer kills will come easier from now on. I hunted for about 6 years before I started killing a deer on a yearly basis. The last 4 or 5 years have been great for me, being that I saw over 50 deer each season and could have tagged out the first few days. This year I saw over 80 deer and filled my tags (6). Good luck and deer season 2008 will be here before you know it.

Thanks! I am hoping to get more next season and I am already stocking up on supplies in anticipation of next season.

Yeah, some of our counties have early archery seasons starting in mid-September. Simply amazing when you think about it. VA has the option of essentially unlimited deer as additional doe tags can be purchased for 18 dollars each (or is it for 2?). Well, something like that at least.

Congrats!

I helped a virg this year get his first. You can't replace the joy of someone who just killed their first big game animal. He made a real nice shot at about 225. Boom, down.

Funny thing is we were just gonna go do a little target practice. We walked back into this old stand on a ridge that I had used years ago. Well, when we got there it just looked really nice so we sat down. I even had my dog with us. I put the mutt on down and we were just sitting there talking.

We had a good wind quartered on our face with a finger running crossways to us up into some canyon/pasture land with a fallow field. Next thing a last year buck shows up at the far end of the field. So two guys and a dog get down and watch this little buck meander right through the middle of this little hidden fallow field.

Buddy steadies gun of a rock shelf we used to be sitting on and whump. First deer down.

Btw, dogs don't help when you are trying to drag out a deer. Mine kept grabbing big bites of the rump and growling trying to get some dinner!

Deer is now processed and has been cut into steaks and tenderloins. I have a small bag that is going to the butcher's for burger, but overall 30 pounds of meat were harvested. The left shoulder was left untouched, mainly because the round shattered it. I was told we could salvage some meat, but it would be crunchy.
