Looking for #1

I was out shopping at Gander Mountain today, and as usual, I pass by the used gun rack to see what's there. I'd been looking for an inexpensive yet reliable shotgun to add to my collection. I haven't fired one since I was about 14 but I'd like to try some target shooting in the spring. What I found today were an 870 express and a 500, both marked at $249. Both 12 ga. with 3" chambers. The 870 had a 28" barrel, while the Mossy was 24". Obviously I've heard wonderful things about these models, and without going into which is better, I'd like to ask what I should look for on a used shotgun. How do I tell what type of barrel it has? What does a choke tube look like? Is $249 a good price for a used one?

Hmm, I don't know about the Mossberg, but at that price, you could probably find an 870 express new at walmart. It might be worth it if the used one has a Remchoke barrel, but I doubt it. I've seen them from walmart with the Remchokes installed.
If the barrel is threaded for choke tubes, and has one installed, you'll be able to see it clearly at the muzzle end. It'll look kind of "two-part ish", and you'll be able to see the little indentations for the choke wrench.
If it's a fixed choke barrel, it'll be stamped with the type of choke up near the receiver in little bitty letters.
If you're the haggling type, I'd try to talk them down from $250.

I bought a new 12ga Mossberg 500A for $209.95 at Wal-Mart a few months ago...comes with 3 chokes and a wrench...A real nice gun for the money.

Gander Mountain has ridiculous prices on their used guns. However, everything is negotiable. Most of the time you can buy new at other places what GM has on their price tag. If you find something used you really want at GM, negotiate the price. By haggling you can usually get a lot knocked off the price. If not, walk and keep walking.
They remind me somewhat of gunbroker.com. Most of their reserve prices are outrageous, plus shipping and FFL fees.
The best way to buy a used gun is at a pawn shop. The tag price has at least 100% markup and there is plenty of room to negotiate a reasonable price.

Unfortunately, my Wal-Mart doesn't sell guns. I guess I'll keep looking.

Last month Academy.com had the 870 Express for $199 with the Remington rebate and Dick's said they would price match. That deal may not come around for awhile, but just so you know what's possible.
