As a family gun I have an old Marlin exposed hammer pump 12 gauge. I just heard that it was deemed unsafe by the Cowboy Action Assoc. due to the problem with the through bolt firing pin. I then read on the Muzzleloading forum that this was fixed in later models. Can anyone shed any light on this? I can't sell the gun since it's a "family" gun and now I might not be able to use it unless it's a later model.

A few smaller SASS affiliated clubs may let you use the Marlin, however they will usually have someone who knows them really well, and is already shooting one.

My advice is if that is the only period SG you have, take it with you to a shoot, and if noone can vouch for its safety, someone will let you borrow a legal one.

Number6jr, This gun has what I'd call a goose barrel on it,really long, would I be crossing the line collector wise having a smith cut it down? Actually if it is an early "dangerous" gun I won't do a thing with it.
I would like to know where I'd be able to find out what serial # would be the improved models and then go from there.
The only other period SG would be a hammerless Knickerbocker 16 gauge and I don't think they use anything but hammered SG's

Don't know for sure what they are talking about, but:
The model 1898, 19, 19G 19N, 19S, 17, 21, 26, and 49 all had one-piece firing pins, as far as I can tell from the Numrich parts drawings.

The later model 28 & 31 had two-piece "Marlin Safety" firing pins.

The only pump gun alllowd by SASS is the Winchester model 97,or clones of it.

double guns without hammers are allowed in most catagories.I"ve been shooting a Stoeger Uplander for years at cas shoots.

why not email or call Marlin? Somebody there should have the answer for you.

as I recall the problem was the bolt could come flying back at the shooter's face when fired, but I may be wrong on that.Sure would check it out bfore shooting it if I were you.

The cowboys on the SASS Wire may know as many of them own them.
