Would there be any interest in a MD THR get together/shoot?

I am thinking that Sun, Aug. 10th at 3pm. That gives two weeks so it isn't last moment yet isn't so long that anyone should forget or anything. 3PM gives those who want to go to church time to go to church and have lunch yet it still shouldn't interfere with dinner with your family.
I'm thinking probably just a pistol shoot at On Target. First, the few times this was tried back in the TFL days there were never very many takers so we probably don't need much more room. Second, I'm not a member of a range or an owner of property where we can just bring a bunch of people. If people are more interested in a rifle shoot there is a public outdoor range up in Westminister but they don't have any pistol lanes there so 25yrds is the minimum there. If there is some interest and a few people are members of one of the gun clubs that meet up in Marriottsville or another club and you don't mind sponsoring a few guests I'm open to other options for place as well.
Edit/Update:
OK, it is for sure then for Sun, August 24th at 3PM.
Email me at newsksshooter@aol.com if you want to go (yes I now AOL is evil, but it is what i have right now). With this I'll be able to post a list of who is confirmed and we'll know what kind of space we need. Post here too of course, I just want a definative list of those who are confirmed and are definately coming.
There does seem to be some real interest. If even half of us make it we just might have to make this a regular event (maybe every 2-3 months).

Spot77, have you picked up the Taurus 83 yet? If you are still thinking about a revolver I'll probably bring one or two of my medium framed revolvers (comprable to the 83) and I may bring my Taurus 85 which would give you a chance to try out an older (just recently bought used, made in '91) Taurus wheelgun. Bring "Mrs. Spot" too since it sounds like your getting the revolver may be with her in mind.

So as of now it looks like either the 17th or 24th with the 24th probably being better.
Hey, this hasn't been up long and there seems to be some interest. Maybe if we get enough people we can see if On Target would be willing to reserve one of the two sides of the range (though I assume that would involve a pre-payment).
Yes, Cslinger that would be the On Target that is up by Ft. Meade. It would be cool to have an ex-Marylander current TN THRer up here for the shoot. I'm guessing that if you made it the number of people who would come would probably double or more.
Spot, a Ruger? Funny, I've been sort of thinking about replacing the P89 I used to have with either a P90 or P95 (I sold my P89, which had been my first auto, around two years ago). Mine wasn't very accurate (though the P90 is and I understand the P95 is far better in that respect than the 89), but one thing all Ruger autos share is 100% reliability and near indestructability. You do need a revolver too though :D

The beast at the top is a Smith and Wesson PC627 8 shot .357 magnum revolver. The thing is just massive and very cool. Unfortunitely it has recently been traded for a semi auto shotgun and a Ruger GP100. I just couldn't shoot it worth a darn. Too big for my hands.

Hey Chaim:
You got room for one more? Just stumbled on this post, and as I read down was getting bummed because the 10th wouldn't work out for me... but the 24th works great. Got a new HK USP45C that I haven't had a chance to take to the range yet (work's been nearly overwhelming lately) but this looks like a great opportunity to make it happen (and meet some of the local THR gang at the same time).
Nice brood of revos, cslinger. My selection is a mite smaller, but my interests are heading more in that direction of late. After a while the self-shuckers all start to look alike. I've got a 4" GP100 (fabulous gun), and my latest acquisitions are a S&W 36 and 63... the former a classic in blue, and the latter a sweet little mousegun.
Looking forward to meeting some fellow MD THRers. Let us know if you manage to "reserve" part of the range ahead of time, chaim, and if you want us to pitch in on any deposit that's required.

Wow, it looks like a lot of interest. Lets get a count of who will definately make it. If you want on the list of those definately coming email me at newsksshooter@aol.com (hey I know AOL is evil and all, but I didn't know that when I signed the contract and I'm still bound if I don't want to pay back a decent rebate it got me on my computer). If we are going to be a really large group we may need to either reserve time or go someplace other than On Target. I'll try to call to find out about reserving half of the range and find out about cost if enough of us are confirmed. If enough say they are going for sure I may ask that a few of us go together to pay the deposit (hey, I'm a broke graduate student), and remember if we do this we'll be committed to whatever the cost is.
Remember, one of my least favorite things about On Target- 4 gun limit per lane (enforced about half the time so we might get lucky). Hmm, I wonder if we reserve enough lanes in advance if they'd be willing to waive that rule :scrutiny:
OK, so it is confirmed, 3PM Sunday, August 24th. I'm looking forward to seeing some of you again and meeting the others.
Now we just need to determine where to go for beer and other refreshments for those so inclined. :D

Some good ideas for the post shoot activity (for those so inclined). Rams Head makes some great beer. Never been to DuClaw. Even though it doesn't make its own, the Last Chance in Columbia isn't bad- having over 50 beers on tap helps make up for the lack of their own beer and the somewhat dirty bar area. So long as we choose a place that is more bar than restaraunt I can go (though it would be better if we stay in the bar area than get a table in the restaraunt- the pesky Jewish/kosher thing;) ). I won't be buying any food, but a beer man I am (yes I keep it in moderation).

I would definately be up for a weeknight shoot sometime. Actually, those would be best for me, I just figured we'd get more people on a weekend.
Hmm, the four I'll be bringing...
Definate:
-My CZ 75B (9mm)
-My Charles Daly 1911
-At least one of my .357s (probably either the 65LS or M19, maybe the 586), I'll even make my own ammo for them.
Maybe:
-My Bersa Thunder .380
-Another .357 (if two, one will probably be the 586 and one would be one of the K-frames)
-My Taurus 85 (I might even make my own ammo for it).
-My used S&W 908 I just bought on Auctionarms (if it comes in and the paperwork with the state is finalized in time for the shoot).:D
Oh if anyone definately wants to do some .22 rifle shooting I could bring my Rem 581 or my Marlin 60. Also, I could make my "maybe" my Hi-point carbine if anyone really wants to try it out. My preference would be to make it one of the listed handguns though (especially if the S&W 908 is ready for pick-up in time, then it is moved to the "definate" list).

Ah, what to bring, what to bring...*shuffling about looking confused with much hand wringing*...aha!
Colt Commander Lightweight with some mods...mmmm, yes...
SigPro 2340 in .40...mmmmm, check...
Late model Universal M1 Carbine...oooo...the liberals want to ban this one now, too...definately...
Remington 870 Wingmaster, modified for home defense...my shoulder may be too sore from the day before from skeet, but folks are welcome to drool and shoot...
Things I want to shoot...my sks. Don't think the folks at On Target would mind 7.62mm holes in their bullet trap, do you? Ah, guess it'll have to wait for another day...;)

I've got a CZ97B I'll bring along for ya to try. I like the gun a lot... but it's definitely a handful. My hands are rather small, and as some have noted that makes the double action reach a bit much for me - but in single action mode the gun feels just right - and since it's designed to be carried cocked-and-locked there's never a need to start off with a double action shot. The gun's impressive mass sure makes a pussycat out of the .45 ACP round.
Probably limit myself to four (don't want to spend all night cleaning). Looks like this (two nines and two 45s):
CZ85B
BHP
CZ97B
USP45c
BTW - the 85B is essentially a 75B with an ambi safety lever (I'm a southpaw) so it "kinda" covers your 75B request. If there are any other special requests I can substitute:
Wilson Combat CQB
Beretta 92FS Inox
S&W 5906
Glock 19 or 36
Ummm... that's enough for now :)

Well I'm not spot, but the staff at Continental is made up of several NRA instructors as well as atleast 1 current Baltimore County Police officer, and Baltimore City Police Officer. There is also a retired Baltimore City Police officer on staff. These arn't regular cops either, they are shooters like us.
A couple of the employees are also ex military that love (and own) the Full auto stuff! And there has been a new addition that is (female) eye candy! They are also paid by the hour not by the amount of guns they sell. they will spend time teaching the customers how to handle and shoot guns correctly, and they will try to find the correct gun for the customer. This is before and after the sale with out charging for their help.
I sound like I have a controling interest in the store but I'm just a very happy customer and range member. It's just that I am on a first name basis with those that work there and I do spend a fair amount of time there just hanging out shooting the breeze, as well as paper.
They are really nice people, to those who frequent their store, as well as the first time visitor.

What are the range fee's?Can I bring in my own targets? Paper plates, etc. Can I bring my own ammo? Or do I have to buy from them in order to shoot.
The custom ear plugs are the greatest thing since mag loaders, I had some made at the last gun show in Frederick, and they work great for me also. They really come in handy when shooting long guns.

You can bring any type of ammo (nothing over 2000 FPS) and anytype of targets to Continental. Range fees are $8 per half hour If they know you they have very long half hours :D
Just be warned the range is hot, it's the air exchange bringing it in from out side so on a day like today it's kinda uncomfortable to shoot for an extended period of time.

Good to know there are so many freedom-loving folks in this sorry excuse for a state... I only wish there were enough of us to take back control of our government from the forces of evil ;)
BTW - I wouldn't mind a Continental shoot some time in the future... I'm a lot closer to Cockeysville than I am to Severn... though I usually shoot at Gunpowder, north of Bel Air because it's on my way home from work. The place would benefit from a bit of maintenance, but hey - it's a place to shoot.

Sorry it took me so long to get back again for an update. It sounds like we have a lot of people coming.
I'm starting to hate On Target. I've been treated badly there several times before (they have some really good people there and some really bad ones, and it seems that one of the managers or owners doesn't think much of me). Then I check into ordering a gun and I find out that even if you haven't picked it up yet, if it comes screwed up their policy is that you buy it when you order it and that is what warranties are for (when I asked if there was any recourse if it comes in messed up I was told "how are we to know what your standards are?")- anyway, no special orders there for me, at least sight unseen internet orders usually come with a guarantee. Now, I'm told that they won't let me reserve space for our shoot (this the day after they told me it probably wouldn't be a problem).
Anyway, if anyone has any ideas other than On Target, and if you guys don't mind changing that part of the plan I'd be up for it. First, I simply don't want to do any more business with them (one or two bad experiences I'm willing to forgive, but it has gotten to where this one guy goes out of his way to give me trouble), let alone bring anywhere from half a dozen to dozens of people there. Second, we may get there and not be able to get enough lane space.
If anyone has some property that is big enough that you shoot on it that would be perfect.
More likely, it looks like we are stuck with On Target (not everyone might get news of any switch). So, most likely on the 24th we'll probably need 3 or 4 of us to get there a bit early to make sure we can get several lanes that are next to each other. Worse case scenario, we'll only get those 3 or 4 lanes and just shoot in shifts (that will give people a chance to talk guns anyway).
Anyway, my vote for future shoots is anywhere but On Target. Continental in Timonium, the range in Glen Burnie (I forget the name), the semi-public outdoor range in Frederick that has both pistol and rifle lanes (we'd have to go fairly early on Sunday to have any range time), rifle only in Westminister or if any members at one of the gun clubs out in Marriotsville wants to sign in a bunch of guests then Marriotsville would be good. I've just become soured on On Target though.

Oh as of right new (6am on Friday, August 8) I have six people who have confirmed on my email that they are coming. Many others here sound like they are probably coming. If you want to confirm you can email me at newsksshooter@aol.com
Of course, since we can't reserve any space after all it is less important that you confirm, though it would be good to know how many will be there. If it is only the six who are currently confirmed and myself I can probably go with one other person about 10min early and we'll probably be ok (OK defined as no more than a 10-15 minute wait for our lanes). If it is 10-12 we may need to get there early to wait for a few lanes next to each other.

Me best bud never liked On Target since they have a policy that no one, even off-duty po-lice, are not allowed to carry onto the property - I know, private property, so we can always vote with are money and go elsewhere.

Late to this thread Chaim ..... being S PA means I can consider MD shoots ...... unfortunately my daughter is visiting for a week and the coming week and more is not very flexible. I'll hope that maybe another shoot can be forthcoming sometime ... never easy this time of year.
In fact I wonder if a South PA shoot might be feasable one day, before we hit winter. I have a great local range where perhaps i could fix for having the range booked for a day for myself and whoever could come.
Always this wish to meet up with some of you guys but ... never easy re logistics.

I aksed about getting a group rate at Continental yesterday. The owners wife told me that they will only do it for Law Enforcement. So it would be the same situtation we a re going to face at On Target as far as getting enough lanes.

Southern PA shoot sounds great. It's only a 25 min. drive to the PA boarder for me.

Jeep .... well, I am only about 45 mins away from Cumberland round here so ... maybe we could pull in guys from N MD and a bit of Southern PA etc ...... but I think cos folks are so tied up still ..... may be best to consider something later on if at all .. late fall maybe would be earliest I could fix anything probably..
I'll certainly give some thought tho to trying something for next Spring at least ........ my locale (in Bedford County) is only about 10 miles North of Turnpike ... pretty easy to get to. I'll run the idea by the guys at club and see if I can fix a day sometime when there are no scheduled shoots there.

I bet we could pull off an October Shoot.
The weather in October won't be all that bad either.
If we do it on a Sunday there won't be any interfereance with hunting season either.

August 9, 2003, 02:34 PM
October could work, yeah ... main prob is this club shoots Sundays .. lookin at the printed schedule ..... 12th and 19th Oct are written in ... they do a lot of trap, sporting clays and archery.
When I'm next there I'll check out some options and see what might work - as well as seeing if they wouldn't mind me taking the range for a whole day. The rifle/pistol section of the range is only 100 yds BTW but .. nicely appointed. I'll give it some thought anyways.

Ok came in real late to this post but I'm in for Aug. 24th. Are we still using On Target? If so I have a membership there and can get someone in at half price. One thing to remember with them (besides some bad staff a.k.a "Guido") is nothing over .44 mag and no shotguns. A few things I will probably be bringing along:
Springfield 1911 Mil-Spec
Walther P99 in .40S&W
Erma remanufactured M-1 Carbine (All GI parts except for the receiver)
and maybe a 9mm (depends on if my wife deceides what she wants by then).
Oh I can also lug some .22s and my Ruger .44 along if anyone wants me to.

P95,
I'd be up for a S. PA shoot sometime. You are southwest I guess. How far from Pittsburgh? Or are you more on the West/Central divide? I think a combo camping and shooting trip in late Sept or Oct would be pretty cool. Just cold enough that the camp fire at night will mean something but warm enough to be fun and comfortable (and not too hot anymore). I think that has to be the best time of year to camp.
If you want to arrange that one I'd be happy to carpool up there, but I couldn't leave until after dark on Saturday night and I'm guessing if the camping part worked out most people would probably want to set up before dark. Still, if anyone would want to join me for the late drive.
anapex,
Yes, it looks like the 24th is probably still at On Target. Unless someone has a membership somewhere that could gaurantee space for us all or has private property they wouldn't mind us shooting on...
More likely, even if there was such an opportunity, enough people have probably penciled this onto their calendars for the 24th at 3PM at On Target that changing now probably isn't a good idea. Probably just want other venues for future shoots.
Who wants to volunteer to come with me about 20 min early to try to be sure we can get 2-4 lanes minimum next to each other? We'll try for 6, but with only 2 or 3 people I doubt if they'll do that for us.

Oh, my list of what to bring may be amended, but it is up in the air right now. In addition to the auction I have bought a Ruger MkII finally (you can pick up two guns in the same transaction and then wait two months instead of one to buy again). Depending upon whether the auction gun is in or not there may be some variablity in my list.
It is either:
-Ruger MkII
-S&W 908
-a .357 (not sure which)
-a toss up between my 1911 (Charles Daly) and my CZ 75B
or (if the guns are still in waiting due to arrival of the used S&W):
-CZ 75B
-one of my .357s (not sure which, but probably the 65LS)
-Charles Daly 1911
-toss up between Taurus 85, another .357, or Bersa Thunder in .380

I can be there early to reserve the lanes as best as we can.
Sometime around the 22nd, I'd like everybody to reconfirm that they'll be there so I know how many lanes we'll need.
After reviewing this thread, it looks like up to about a dozen people are coming. Feel free to bring non THR members.

Chaim ...... apart from getting range availability sanctioned I am wondering re the camping aspect....... something I had not given much thought to but .... logical, of course.
The range does sit in a good many acres and in fact I have not explored all ... but I think most is wooded .. so not sure right now if enough space for camping. Could be I can find something close by .... but thus far no ideas.
Location-wise ....... well, I am about 2 and some hours to ESE of Pittsburg ..... not too far in fact from where I 99 and Turnpike cross each other. If you look at Rand McNally ... look at Southernmost counties ...... Bedford County is fourth along from left!!!
Apart from MD guys, I'd reckon maybe a few from N VA, WV might manage, and ..... in PA itself, probably quite a few who might be in the two hour radius. Even East OH could work too.
Anyways ..... it's early days ... very embryonic but give a me a week or so and I'll see how things look. As I mentioned earlier .. if no joy for this fall .. I'll sure try and fix something if i can for next Spring.

Have a good time for me.
Hey, if it falls through: there is a show in Roanoak, VA this weekend at the civic center- lets all go get some high cap feeding devices to piss off our state attorney general, etc. We have friends who just moved to Roanoak (lucky friends) and now I just NEED to visit!
Even if I was going, I wouldn't recommend a beer afterwards with guns in the trunk in maryland! I'm sure you would be charged under the new ant-americ... anti-terrorism laws.
but at least you'll have a bunck of new buddies to clear out your house for you before the feds get there!
I will keep trying to make it to one of these things!

Even if I was going, I wouldn't recommend a beer afterwards with guns in the trunk in maryland Darn, I wasn't thinking about that. Under MD law if you so much as stop for gas between home and the range you are in violation of the law. Maybe we could have an hour break so we can go home and put our guns away (and if someone chooses not to at least they had the opportunity) and then those who wish to can meet up nearby for a beer.
This thread has become far longer than I thought. I may open a new thread specifically for people to check in if they plan to go. My email address has 8 confirmations right now (I won't ID them since a few didn't give their member names and I don't know for sure that the email goes with which specific member in all cases). There are also several here.
Hmm, I might not though. Since we can't reserve the lanes in advance it is less important to have a relatively accurate count. Maybe if a few of us get there early we should just ask for 5 lanes next to each other and if there are 10 of us we can either share lanes (2 guns per person to meet On Target's 4 gun limit per lane) or we can switch off (and of course if there are more we'd have to switch off, or if there only turn out to be 5 we can each have a lane).
I will be meeting with my chavrusa (religious study partner) as usual on Sunday, but I've changed our meeting time to noon and I'll be leaving the upper Park Heights/Greenspring section of Baltimore at around 2pm so I should be at On Target between 2:30 and 2:45 depending upon traffic.

OK, we had a decent turnout for this sort of thing (at least for how well I had it organized). There were six of us and it was a good time. Sorry Cliff about the Mrs.' accident and anapex about the bookkeeping mixup.
I didn't bring much because I wasn't feeling great (got a summer cold) and I wasn't sure if I would be shooting. Still got to meet some great MD shooters and try out a few guns I wouldn't have otherwise (I was horrible with the SIGpro but I liked it and I liked the HK a heck of a lot more than I thought I would). I did do some shooting and a few of you guys saw how bad a shot I really am.
We had mdshooter, Norton, Spot77, LeadPumper, SolomonShort and me. Did anyone else get there and just miss us, maybe you didn't know who was from THR and didn't want to introduce yourself around trying to find us? Just in case I think I'll bring a sign next time.
That isn't a bad showing and everyone seemed pretty interested in the idea to make this a semi-regular occurance. Also, several people didn't make it who wanted to. I think we may be able to make this every other month or so at roving ranges (probably Continental Arms in Timonium next time).
I've got to go because I'm about to be late to meet SolomonShort and LeadPumper for a beer (yes, we followed MD law and brought our guns home first).

Just got home myself - would have loved to swing back by and hoist a few with chaim, LeadPumper & SolomonShort, but it's a 2 hour round trip for me so I'll hoist a couple in your honor from here :D
Just wanted to second the notion that it was great getting together with a few fellow Maryland gun nuts and THRers. Really nice bunch of guys. Thanks to whoever came up with the idea and to chaim for getting the ball rolling (and keeping it rolling) here online.
And don't be so hard on yourself chaim - you're not as bad a shot as you make it sound. I'm a bit on the rusty side myself (work and family and such as really cut into my practice time lately) but we both did well enough to dispatch all but the skinniest perp who might have the bad judgement to surprise us in the middle of the night ;)
Hope the rest of the guys had as much fun as I did (ditto everything chaim said about how cool it is to try out new stuff that others brought to the party) and looking forward to doing it again.

Yeah, Norton, that 97 sure was nice. I already love CZs and I've been working to resist the 97 (money) but I don't know how much longer I'll be able to resist now. Your HK is also a nice gun. I don't think I've ever shot them before. I had simply decided from handling them once some time ago that they didn't do it for me (something about plastic guns). Man, your HK and SolomonShort's SIGpro, I just might have to rethink my ideas about polymer guns after all. Hmmm, and HKs do have a MD approved lock too. I can see the money just flying out my wallet as we speak (um, well, as we write anyway).

I keep repeating the mantra "buy a new safe before another gun". I'm jonesing for that CZ97, but I have to get some more secure storage before I add anything to the collection. If, as I suspect, that I will be inheriting a bunch of the FIL's collection, I'll be probably adding a concrete block house to the back yard with integrated safes:D
I like my HK a lot, but there is something very satisfying about having an all metal gun, ala your .357.
