Hi,

I recently inherited a Winchester model 52 22 target rifle equipped with an unusual scope.

It appears to be manufactured by J Unertl, and as far as I can tell is a 16 power scope.

It also has an adjustable objective, and the windage / elevation adjustments are external.

I was wondering if anyone had any infromation on the operation / adjustments of this scope. It hasn't been used in 25+ years. I've tried gently turning the objective adjuster, and also what I believe is the focus on the rear of the scope by the eyepiece (it's a bit blurry) but neither will budge.

I haven't put much pressure on it because I'm not sure what is / isn't an adjustment and don't want to damage it.

I'd like to take it out to the range, it's been idle to long (was my grandfathers used in competition many, many, many years ago.

Thanks for any advice,
Leo

It's a piece of junk. I'll do you a favor and take the whole package off your hands for $100.

Just kidding. Great classic scope/rifle combination. Unertl is still in business and I'll bet would be happy to give you info if you wrote to them. The adjustments were external in order to allow the optics to be sealed and protected from shock. They used to (possibly still do, but I think Leopold builds the majority now) build scopes for sniper weapons for various branches of the military.

their url is: www.unertloptics.com

P.S. Don't ever sell it.

Thanks for the info. I'll have to contact them to see about having it gone through I guess.

Towards the end of his shooting career he suffered from very poor eyesight, and I'm sure that's the reason it's out of focus in an attempt to correct for it, I'm just afraid to force any of the adjustments.

I did some more searching last night and now know it to be an 1.5 objective, 16 power scope.

Unertl Co. will overhaul your scope for a fee, however the waiting time is rather long.

Hi,

After doing some more searching online I came across a set of instructions online..

Didn't realize there was a lock ring on the parallax adjustment. After loosening it up (was tight) and then looseing the parallax up, and sliding the 'housing' for lack of a better word back and forth the adjustment works smoothly now.

After dechiphering how to do the adjustment the scope can be brought perfectly into focus, and I'm very impressed!

Can't wait for a decent day to take it out and try the rifle out. Apparently the 40+ years of inactivity just stiffened things up a bit.

Thanks for all the help.

Leo

I have a couple of older Unertls (programmers). They are very desireable and in good condition can demand fairly high prices.

Take a look here:
