How much ammo do you carry?

When you carry concealed, how many reloads do you carry?

I carry at least two reloads for each gun that I carry. For example, when I carry my S&W M13 and my Taurus M85, I carry two speedloaders for each of them.

I'm asking due to reading Mas Ayoob's column about prosecutors using the fact that someone carried extra ammo to accuse him of "wanting to kill someone."

Thanks.

I went with 4 or more reloads since this is in the revolver thread. If this was an "all gun" thread it would vary, but averagely 1 reload for each gun. However, the very few times I have actually carried a revolver I had an entire box of ammo, course I never got out of the car ;)

Well I voted the 4+ per gun. I just went to dinner and this is what I carried:

Springer TRP 1911

4 spare mags 2 8rd, 2 10rd

45 ".45" rounds total (how convenient )

Ruger sp101 BUG
10 speed strips
2 second six

77 rounds of .357mag

for a grand total of 122 rounds of ammo!

Sometimes I carry my XD-45 and that adds up a bit more ammo for the 45, then add second BUG of NAA 22mag and thats even more.

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l84/forestpriest/DailyCarryonBeltMedium.jpg

I've added some since then :D

I would put myself into the "extreme" category...can anyone beat me?

Off Duty I carry either a GP100 or a S&W 22-4 with two reloads in a Digital Camera Case. It hides the reloads and doesn't look "gunny". Then I have my BUG and two reloads for it.

In total I have 22 rounds as reloads and the original 11 rounds in two guns for a total of 33 rounds. Ig I'm carrying my Glock 19 off duty, which is seldom, I have just carry one reload for it, the same if I carry the Kahr PM9.

I carry no reloads on my person. I simply do not see the odds of a scenario happening where I'd need more than what's in the gun. How many all out shootouts between citizens and bad guys do you ever read about? Statistically, it's a one or two shot affair if even ANY shots are fired.

Living in Florida, it's hard enough to conceal without the added bulk of reloads. I used to keep an extra mag in the car, but I've taken to not doing that recently as I carry one of three guns.

When I'm stateside, I always carry 1 reload. Though I realize that the "odds are" that I'll never ever need to reload in a particular defense situation... I've always thought that if I'm in a shooting situation I'm already so far behind the odds already that I'm sure not going to gamble that the odds will suddenly start improving to where a reload won't be needed.

No reloads. I carry a Glock 17, so that is 17+1 right there.

If I am going hiking/camping I carry another mag, so now I am up to 35 rounds.

Though if I am going camping I usually also have my Blackhawk with me. I think each .45 Colt handload is equivalent to like 13 kilotons so I usually just have the gun loaded (6 shots, new blackhawk, safe to carry with one under the hammer) and have 15 or 20 extra rounds packed away.

I guess it is a big, "it depends", but 99% of the time I don't carry a reload.

When I carry an auto which is 95% of the time I carry the gun loaded plus 3 extra mags. Today I am carrying a Sig 229 40 S&W so I have a total o 48 rds on me. Depending on the gun I will have between 24-68rds of ammo on me.

With revolvers, no reloads usually. Very occasionally I will carry a speedstrip with my SP-101.

When out hiking or hunting with my Redhawk I've got my gunbelt loops filled with 24 spare rounds, but they aren't in speedloaders. If I'm concerned with any 2-legged problems I will toss an HKS speedloader or two into a spare pocket (if I have a spare pocket).

I'm more concerned about a magazine failure in an automatic than capacity; I will carry 1 extra magazine for my 1911 or for my XD9 if carrying an auto.

Regarding extra auto reloads azredhawk44 nailed it.

Also, if you have to clear a type 2 or 3 malfunction, much easier to drop the mag, clear the gun, and reload from the mag carrier then to fumble around with the "mag retention" kubuki dance.

Just my opinion. As always, YMMV.

Didn't vote, because it depends on the circumstances.

If I'm carrying around the very low risk town where I live, it's often just my Smith Model 37 Airweight, and no reloads.

If I'm somewhere where the potential for a problem is significantly greater, I'm more likely to carry either a 1911 or XD45 with a couple of extra magazines.

And there are varying shades of gray in bewtween.

BTW, in the rare instances when I'm only carrying one revolver, I carry three or more reloads, but I also usually have a KelTec P32 holding 8 rounds with an extra 7 round magazine. There have been times, usually if a relative needs to visit an "ungood" neighborhood, when I have carried three revolvers (1 - S&W 681, 1 - S&W 13, 1 - Taurus 85ULSS, with two reloads each and my KelTec P32 with one reload, 66 rounds total. I stay away from water when loaded down like this.

I carry one or two speed strips(6 rounds each) when I carry my 5 shot S&W 642 or Ruger SP101. Right now, I'm carrying an SP101 in my holster and I have one speedstrip in my pocket.

I don't like speed loaders because they are so fat, preferring the flat speedstrips even though a reload is slower.

I'm asking due to reading Mas Ayoob's column about prosecutors using the fact that someone carried extra ammo to accuse him of "wanting to kill someone."I suppose that a prosecutor could say the same thing about merely having a CCW on you.

S&W 642 with 2 speedloaders (usually). Sometimes I just carry a single reload.

I'm not yet carrying my 1911, but will carry it with one extra 7 rounder when I do.

So 15 shots total for either. Far more than enough for anything I'm ever likely to encounter in my quiet neck of the woods.

In winter, spring and fall, I carry a S&W Model 29-3 6 inch with four speed loaders full of Speer Short barrel 200 grain JHP Magnum ammo. Very accurate and controlable. The BUG is a Springfeild TRP (no rail) with at lest two spare Wilson Combat 8 round mags loaded with Hornady TAP 230 grain JHP. Last ditch back-up is a Gerber Applegate-Fairbairn Covert folding knife.

Summertime gun is the same .45 TRP with two spares or on very hot days I'll go to a Springfield .45 Micro Compact 3 inch with two 7 shot wilson combat mags. Clothing permitting, I'll carry a S&W Model 60 in an ankle rig with two speed loaders as a bug to the little .45. The load for this gun is the old FBI 158 grain Plus P lead hollow point. The Gerber goes along too, of course.

Someone once asked me since I carried so much hard ware, if I was expecting trouble where ever I was going. My reply was simple. If I was expecting trouble, I wouldn't go.

Finally, I'm 6 feet even and weigh in at 150 out of the shower so if I can conceal these weapons, anyone can. You can hide a lot of useful tools if you work at it and choose holsters and clothing with care. The key is to avoid looking like you work for Blackwater.

As Jeff Cooper used to say, "There's such a thing as enough ammunition. And ther's such a thing as not enough ammunition. There's no such thing as too much ammunition."

It seems that if your pants fall down due to the weight, you have too much ammunition (or in need of better support). If you win the lottery and get caught up in the "one in a million" gunfight that lasts longer than the statistical 2.5 shots (or whatever it is), no amount of ammunition manufactured that year will be enough. If you go out and return without noticing your hardware, maybe you had the right amount.

Me, I'm bass ackwards ... in the wintertime I have a 1911 riding in a IWB with two spare magazines on the opposite hip. I usually wear a sweater and winter coat over it. This, in effect makes my BUG the primary (since it's in the outside coat pocket) ... a S&W 340PD for which I don't carry speedloaders since it would be quicker to go through the required motions to draw the 1911.

For those who don't carry reloads, I can only point out that most people under stress fire their gun empty when they start shooting it unless well-trained. Semiauto shooters aren't immune, either. I've seen many people pulling the triggers on 1911's with the slides locked back. You should have seen the surprise on their faces.

Now, firing your gun empty might not be a problem if you take out your target and don't have any others. Maybe my time in the military makes me leery of not having enough ammunition. I know lots of guys who think the standard infantry basic load of seven thirty-round M16 magazines (210 rounds) weren't near enough.

Typical carry is a SP101 in 357mag and/or a 642-1. I carry a speed strip strong side rear pocket with (6) 135gr GDHP's.

If I'm wearing a jacket or coat, a speedloader or two usually goes along in a pocket too.

Most of the time I just carry one reload. And sometimes I don't even have that.

My SP-101 is what I use to fight my way out of a situation. Or if the mood is right, to fight my way to another firearm. Preferably a rifle.

(Honestly I would prefer to carry more, but it's just not handy enough.)

I'd rather do with less and carry something, than not carry at all. The one time I had to use a handgun in a defensive situation it was against three or four guys in a car trying to run me off of the road.
At the time all I had was a single shot BP derringer I had thrown in the back seat after a trip back to my parent's farm. And it wasn't even loaded. Fortunately they weren't interested in sticking around long enough to find that out.

If there is an area where I might face more than 1-2 goblins, you are not going to find me there. If this is an area I MUST be in because of work, family, etc. Usually you will find me armed with more than a handgun, and I generally do not travel alone in such areas.

With either my S&W M60 or SP101, I carry 2 speedloaders on my off side, a Speedstrip in my pocket should I need it, and if it's winter, I carry an additional 2 speedloaders in my jacket. 20 rounds in summer, and 30 in winter if you add it up.

I used to carry 6 in the gun and a spare speed loader. I just got back from Thunder Ranch though and now I carry as many as I can, in as many places as I can. Which means, I'm working my way up to four, five, or six speed loaders, and two or three speed strips. Right now it is four speed loaders (two in each front pocket, you guys are working on left handed reloads, right?), and two speed strips (one in each back pocket, for if I need/want to tactical load).

Oh yea, did I mention the backup gun? An Extra 6 there and can be reloaded with the speed strips.
