Saw a cop with sidearm on wrong side

Yesterday I saw a right-handed cop having lunch with his partner. He wrote right handed and had his watch on the left wrist but his sidearm was on the left. I realize cops are not quick draw specialists but wearing your holster on the weak-hand side just seems weird. Anyone ever seen this?

Well, he may actually be one of those strange people with different dominance amongst hands.
I write/eat left handed.
I play baseball/basketball/football right handed.
I shoot with my right hand dominant, but my left hand isn't too far behind.
So, he may shoot left handed.

You sure he's right handed? I did almost everything with my left hand except signing paperwork, when I worked armored, to keep my gun hand clear. I still do that.
Or was it crossdraw?
If he IS right handed, wearing it for draw from his weak hand, that is highly unusual. I would expect his Dept to mandate wear on the strong side, like mine does,

or has cross dominate eyes and follows the NRA's recommendation to learn to shoot from the side of your dominate eye.

I am left handed, I right left handed, eat left handed and such. However I carry on my right hip. I do the cross dominate eye thing which I know is not kosher with a lot of guys but it works for me.

You could have just asked him about it....
As for me, I shoot pistols right handed, but I shoot rifles left handed. (Makes my dad's bolt-action 7mm a pain.)

I'd agree with the second half of ilbob's statement. He is probably right-handed but left-eye dominant.
It is generally easier to shoot weak-hand/strong-eye than to shoot strong-hand/weak-eye.

It wasn't in a cross draw position. Maybe he's ambidextrous. I'm cross eye dominate (right handed, left eye dominate) but shooting left handed? Can't see doing that with the speed and efficiency of my right hand. When I shoot IPSC, I've learned to cock my head to the right allowing my left eye to focus on the front site. Either that or a piece of scotch tape over the left lense of my glasses, which forces right eye dominance.
I suppose I should have asked! I wondered if it was some twisted sense of political correctness here in California. Was the cop trying to demonstrate that he isn't quick to draw his weapon? I wouldn't like that if I were his partner! Anyway, I just found it odd.

It depends... my father is right handed, but carries his gun for a left draw. He is also a martial arts expert and feels that his right hand is more useful as a defense weapon than his left. Therefore, he boosts the deadliness of his weak hand with a gun and keeps his strong hand free for close-quarters duty.
Sure it wasn't a Taser? When holstered they look like a Glock.
This is the most likely reason.

I am left thanded, Used to shoot Left (30+ years) and was left eye dominant. Due to a uncorrectable left eye problem, I have now become right eye dominant, and therefore learned to shoot right. With Practice, it was not a huge issue, getting back to the same level of shooting ability.
Probably safe to say that most lefty's do much more with the nondominant hand that do naturally right handed people.

Did you get a look at what was on his right side? Recent LEOs that I've gotten a good look at carry a Taser on one side with the firearm on the other.

im right handed and left eye dominant. i shoot pistols right handed and rifles left handed. iv found i am more accurate and can get faster folow up shots with a rthanded bolt action than can thr rt handed shooters i know. im not a great pistol shot but i am better than some guys i know who shoot dominate eye/dominant side. it just takes a lot of practice

In regards to cross-draw, are officers still allowed to do that? I read a few times that most organizations were saying "no cross-draw" for various reasons.

Me too. I made a comment in passing to a pair of police in one of the airports when I noticed one of them wearing like this. His buddy didn't appreciate my "interrupting" their conversation. But that's just me... people pleaser all the way!

I have an officer in my dept who is right-handed, except when it comes to his handgun, which he uses left-handed. The reason? He's cross-eyed dominant. He shoots the rifle & shotgun right-handed, but the handgun gets shot left-handed.
So, nothing is on his "wrong side".

If I see this cop again, which I just might as I often grab lunch at this little Miso place in Little Tokyo and the cop is Japanese. I will ask him next time.
For those that asked, his taser was on the right side of his belt. The left side was a Glock.
I didn't realize so many cross eye dominate guys like me would shoot pistol left handed. I shoot rifles left (though I like right side ejection with bolt guns) but not pistols. Maybe I'll give it a try.

Another mixed bag here. I shoot left. I write and use a fork left also. I shoot a bow right handed. I do some of my job right hand. I throw right hand...things get wierd just trying to figure out how to do some things.

I swing a bat or club right handed. I kick a ball left footed. I write left handed. I shoot (pistols and rifles) left handed. I think I am left eye dominant (every time I've tested myself, I've gotten different results). I wiggle my left ear better than my right, and I can touch my left eyebrow with my tongue, but not my right eyebrow. I have less dry skin on my left elbow than my right, but my left big toe is more crooked than my right big toe. I can put my right foot in, and I can take my right foot out, but I can't hokey pokey to save my life.
What were we talking about?

i write right handed. play hockey left, can play baseball either side. can shoot left handed pistol. but not rifle. can do archery either way. my fishing rod is set up left handed i believe. ( i donno, i assume reels come set for right handers, and i always switch the handle side)
my aunt is completely ambidextrous.

We've had similar discussions here before, but it is a good topic to revisit.
I am right-eye dominant. Most of the time. But I can shoot a shotgun with equal skill (or relative lack thereof) right or left. I definately prefer shooting rifles left-handed, though I have to close my right eye to do it. I shoot archery left-handed. I throw left-handed, kick a football left-footed, play tennis or racquetball left-handed (but was known to switch hands if my back-hand couldn't quite reach far enough), but golf, bat and write right-handed. When I played volleyball I served overhand left-handed (not much different from a tennis serve). I can shoot a pistol with either hand, but prefer right-handed. I will use whichever hand will yield the best angle when using a hammer or paintbrush. (It used to drive my father crazy to watch me do that when I was a kid.)
So, the cop was probably left-eye dominant, but wrote right-handed.

I write, shoot and eat, left handed and wear my watch on my left wrist.
Basketball, bowling, baseball all right handed.
I think a lot of it as lefties grow up, a lot of the teachers are right handed, so you copy what they do. I think that is how I ended up doing the right handed things.
Some things I can equally well right or left. I really need to work on my right handed shooting though, it isn't as good as the left.

i'm another weird one. i guess i'm more or less ambidextrous. when i was learning to write as a kid, i used to pick the pencil up with a different hand every time. my parents had a hard time deciding which way i ought to go. my dad, a lefty [in most things], decided that if i could go either way i should go right so i didn't have to deal with the inconveniences he did.
write: right
cut food: left
shoot: right, though this makes me want to try left.
basketball: left
shoot pool: mostly right, but can easily switch. drives pure righty opponents crazy.
batting: right
throwing: used to be right until i had a couple serious right arm injuries. i switched as an adult to left-handed throwing and am now nearly as capable as i was right-handed. still building arm strength a bit.

Many people are missing the point here. We're talking about a handgun. Like someone previously said he's probably ambidextrous. As for being cross eye dominate it's really no problem when shooting a handgun. A right hand shooter can easily use his left eye and vice versa. The problem comes into play when shooting either a rifle or shotgun.

January 17, 2008, 12:29 PM
I'm ambidextrous as well. So what ever is easier for me is how I set things up.
I use my right hand for most stuff because everything is made for righties, but if it is a left handed item I'll use it no problem.
I can win almost every game of HORSE because I can shoot basket balls right or left handed so when it is my turn to shoot I just goto the hand the other guy sucks with.... :)
I even bowl right or left handed. I'm actually better with my left hand than my right when bowling.
I can write left and right handed. Thing is most notebooks and desks are for right handed people so growing up most ambidextrous people use their right hand out of ease. Plus if you write left handed you have to worry about smearing ink or smudging pencil and it is awful writing on spiral notebooks made for righties.
I've always worn my watch on my right hand though, which makes people think I'm a lefty.
My father is a lefty and wears his watch on his left hand so that could just be a family thing.
Shooting I shoot right handed since 99% of guns are set up to eject to the right and everything is geared for a rightie. I guess I am right eye dominant by the test of pointing at a wall and closing one eye and then another and which ever makes your finger 'jump' is the dominant eye but I can shoot with either eye...
