How do you say "7.62 X 39"?

...I usually say "seven-point-six-two by thirty-nine" and get strange looks at gun shops...is there a better way to refer to this round?

For me, 'seven sixty-two by thirty-nine'. I've also heard it called 'thirty Russian' (.30 Russian), but, IMO, this is not a good description as 7.62 X 54R could also be called .30 Russian.

I think what you're calling it is correct and would be understood by most gun enthusiasts. It's interesting that the employees at the shops near you don't know what you are saying. What do they call the cartridge? I'm guessing something like, "the round the AK fires" or "the AK round".

hksw--

They know what I'm referring to, but they just seem to think it's a strange way to refer to it...I imagine they would call it something like the "AK round." Folks seem to be nervous about using long-winded (if correct) terminology. Being a lifelong nerd (and English major to boot), I have no such compunctions.

".30 Russian" is really too imprecise...maybe ".30 Kurtz?" Nahhh....what's Russian for "short"?

We always just referred to our ammo as "seven-six-two" and specified Soviet ammo as "seven-six-two ComBloc" or "seven-six-two Soviet".

Refer to the round as "7.62". Which makes me wonder what they call the full-power 7.62x51 NATO round. :D

I usually say seven six two by thirty-nine or fifty-four R as the case may be. Sometimes I refer to them as seven six two Russian short or long. When I really want to see their brain implode I ask for 7.62x51 and watch the random box grabbing begin.

Like OEF_VET: "seven six two by thirty nine"

I also call 5.56x45 ".223 NATO", which is REALLY wrong, but I like it!

I usually go with "seven six two by thirty-nine." I have an old reloading manual that refers to this round as "7.62 Soviet" and the 7.62x54R as "7.62 Russian." I suppose the logic relates to the government for which the cartridges were developed. I like these designations, but because most people seem to refer to all people that were citizens of the USSR as "Russians" and continue to call present day Russians "commies," I have received nothing but confused looks when I employ these cartridge names.

I call it "seven six two by thirty nine." Most books call it 7.62 Soviet.

More often: 'seven six two by thirty nine"

I find I have a similar problem as Benton. To me 7.62Soviet and 7.62Russian should be fairly obvious. However gun shop owners never seem to get it, and considering that I have rifles chambered in both 7.62x39 and 7.62x54 all I can say is that I really hate saying ' seven point six.... etc' every freakin' time I want to buy ammo.

Uhh, I want that box of cheap ammo in the back. Thank you very much.

Actually I usually say seven point six two by thirty-nine or just six two by thirty-nine as shorthand.

How about 30 Short and Weak.....

or

7.62 Short and Weak.....

After all, gotta diferentiate it from the 7.62x51mm some how. EVERY time I ever tell somebody I'm gonna take my 7.62 out for a bit of shooting I always get "oh, 7.62x39mm?".

".30 short and weak"? 7.62x51 is not an intermediate round. Don't mix up calibers. Not many people willing to stand in front of an AK to show how "short and weak" the round is. "Short and weak" enough to go through almost 1/4" of steel plate at 80 feet.

uglygun
July 29, 2003, 08:44 PM
30Short&Weak was tongue and cheek and was to imply that those "intermediate" 7.62x39mm rounds are for sissies, hence the reason I differentiate from 7.62Nato...... To think, I was simply commenting on what people typically assume if I mention I'm taking a 7.62 out shooting, they jump right to 7.62x39mm rather than 7.62x51mm.

Gosh, I go out of my way to try and be funny and it flys right over someone's head. See, it was something akin to how the 40S&W is lovingly called the "Short&Weak" by those who like the 10MM Auto. I'm more a fan of the 7.62Nato and that's why I find it funny to refer to the 7.62x39mm as a "short&weak" in comparision to the 7.62x51mm and have used it in response to the assumptions by others that I meant 7.62x39mm.

I own an SKS and yep, it almost goes through that 1/4 inch mild steel plate while something like a 7.62Nato or 30-06 Springfield goes right on through... :) Then there's my 300WinMag which is almost making it through 1 1/4 inches of steel plate, guess it makes the 7.62 Nato "modest and conservative" if I refer to the the 7.62x39mm as "short&weak".

Anyhow, I am a handloader and recognize the obvious differences between the rounds. Sorry I got you all rialed up.

My buddies and I usually refer to it as "SKS Ammo" We will usually say something like

"Before I head to the range I need to stop at the gun store and pick up some SKS ammo. Do you need anything as long as I am there?"

I think I am going to start calling it seven-six-two Com., for the Communist regime it was invented under. Those who know their history should know that the 7.62x54R was a pre-Communist round, so my appelation shouldn't confuse them, although I'm sure it still will.

Uglygun, forget the subtle humor humor here. I tried it three weeks ago in my post "Will a .30-06 stop a tornado?" http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?threadid=29541, which was my subtle jab at the magnum mania that seems to grip today's firearms scene, and it went over like a lead balloon. Of course, it didn't help that I threw in that reference to strawberries at the end, which is just about all most people commented on.:( Maybe it wasn't all that funny (a lot of my rather dry sense of humor isn't caught or understood), but at least I tried a little levity, and I appreciate your attempt also, as I do all decent attempts to bring a little smile into the oh-so-serious subject of guns.
