My cheapest buy was an "estate" type sale where I picked up 3 guns for $125. The S&W revolver in the group had an aftermarket cylinder and bbl.

A British Webley revolver in 38 S&W made in WWII. I paid $75 for it. It had tooling marks all over it and a really ugly finish. I was dry firing it at home when it froze up. A gun smith told me a part was broken (I can't remember what it was called) and there were no replacement parts for it. "Just hang it on the wall" he said. I sold it in a pawn shop for $25. I never did get to fire that gun.

I picked up a CZ-100 in .40, private sale, for $100. The pistol is in good shape, with just some bluing wear on the adjustable rear sight. Came with the CZ hard case, manual, and two mags. It is perfectly reliable, compact and lightweight, though ugly as sin. The trigger pull is long, but relatively light. Recoil is a little snappy, but easy to control.

I admit to being unsure what to do with it. I carry a Commander, and use same for home defense. After shooting the CZ, girlfriend also still prefers 1911-style guns, and will appropriate Commander after my new 5" pistol is ready. Daughter likes .22 Browning. Can't shoot the CZ in IDPA 'cause the barrel is (factory) ported.

But a decent modern pistol for $100? I couldn't turn it down.

In 2004 dollars? This is a key point, as I paid $205 for a NIB Walther PP in .22LR from a dealer. That was in 1975, of course. Paid even less for a NIB High Standard .22Mag 9-shot revolver as I recollect. The Walther would cost upwards of $900+ at Earl's today, IIRC.

It's all relative. "Inexpensive" is different than "cheap". I can honestly say that the "cheapest" handgun I ever bought was a .380 AMT backup, when I was working the street and they were the 'latest' thing. Pretty worthless, IMVHO. Several 'better' alternatives available, even then, at around the same price, which I can't even remember now. I only kept it a couple of months, but I was a trading fool back then. One of the few guns I ever traded out of that left me with no regrets. YMMV.

A few years ago an old shooting friend died. I had the opportunity to buy a pistol from his collection, and chose the Walther PP in .380 that I remembered him shooting most often with me. He had quite a collection, but that old, heavily fired Walther was a steal at $150.

It was about that time that I started teaching my son to shoot. He latched onto that .380 and does pretty well with it. I think my friend would be pleased that one of his pistols is being used to train the next generation of shooters.

Cheapest gun I ever bought is a High Standard Sentinel Deluxe, 9-shot .22lr revolver with something like a 6" barrel(don't remember exactly and it's packed away for shooting tomorrow). Blueing is a bit worn, and the DA pull is a little heavy, but it's got an awesome SA and pretty accurate too.

Cheapest gun I own is a Raven .25 I got for free off a neighbor. Haven't had a jam so far, and it is reasonably accurate for what it is meant for. Pretty fun little plinker for being free.

It's reblued but not ugly and works just fine. A pawn shop had it marked at $100 and I was surprised when it didn't sell. After 30 days he still had it and told me to make an offer. I said $60 and he took it.

150 euros for a S&W M14-2 with an anatomic custom grip that fits my hand perfectly. Finishing is worn and scratchy, and the forcing cone had a small problem. After 25€ worth of smithing, still looks abused but shoots like a dream!

It was a Sako L461 Vixen-Varmint, single-shot action, walnut stock, heavy stainless-steel barrel in cal. 6 mm PPC.

This rifle was stolen during transport from the gun distributor to its final destination (gun dealer), but eventually recovered by the police. Fortunately, 6 mm PPC ammunition is scarce on the black market and the rifle was too big to be carried concealed. :evil: It also didn't feature open sights or a mounted scope either and the thief couldn't make any unlawful use of it.

After criminal prosecution and trial (years after the theft) the rifle was given back to the gun distributor and I bought it dirt cheap in virtually unused condition (the stock has a couple of tiny scratches, though) for US-$ 43.00!

I admit that I only bought it because it was so cheap and I was aware that Sako Ltd. has already stopped production of the older actions (L461, L579, L61R) a couple of years ago. The rifle is sitting in my safe and I have not even shot it yet...

Unfortunately, I didn't get the chance to acquire a cheap (but good) handgun yet. I bet, when I ever get the one-in-a-lifetime opportunity I won't have an approved license (prescribing gun type and caliber for purchase) in my gun owners permit. Safeguard your 2nd Amendment rights unless you enjoy being treated in the same way we are by the authorities here. :(

A Browning Buckmark Target, 5.5" barrel, new in the box for $100.00. When living in western North Carolina, I answered an ad in one of the free trader magazines for a ".22 - $100.00"; that was all the info provided. It was a lady getting divorced from her husband and moving back to Tennessee. Among the other things her husband had done was giving her this gun for a present, when he knew she did not shoot, or even like guns. He obviously wanted it for himself, so she made sure he never got to use it. I even told her the gun was easily worth three times what she was asking, but she wouldn't take any more than she was asking. It had a nickelled rail and frame, and shot very well. Of course, some scumbag stold it and about 7 other handguns from me a few years later. Easy come, easy go.

Here's the deal: My sister in law's husband was always picking up Marlboro miles as they were on their daily walks. She always berated him for doing that and never sending them in for the Marlboro gear, but yet when he got ready to do so, she complained that the shipping was WAY too much money for it, blah, blah, blah.

So they were over at our house, and she started in about them, so I said, "Bring your bag of Marlboro miles over next time, and I'll trade you a pistol for them." I knew he had always wanted a handgun, but he could never bring himself to buy one, especially with his wife thinking that anything like that would be spending the kids' inheritance.

Anyhow, he did, I did, and she had to shut up and listen to him tell everybody how he got his handgun by ignoring her.

Cheapest was a Bicentennial marked Ruger .30 Carbine for $125 from a guy who had been working on the Alaskan pipeline, and could afford anything that struck his fancy, but when he got back down here, he had trouble adjusting his spending habits for the first few paychecks.

I got a no-name .22 revolver (blue, 4") once at a gun show.... it had trouble igniting the primer in both DA and SA, plus the empties (and even unfired rounds to an extent) were much tougher than they ought to be to extract due to 2 of the 6 chambers evidently being a bit too small. Very irritating. Paid $90 for it.

Tried to get a 'smith to fix things up; no luck.

Technically, it "worked".... but it was totally counter to the enjoyable shooting and understudy-to-centerfire-revo role that I bought it for. Eventually got a loan on it from a pawn shop for about half of what I paid and just kinda never went back for it. I guess I just don't have the lack of conscience to personally and willfully push a gun like that off on somebody in a private sale.


To this day I couldn't tell you which irked me more, the gun's performance or the wasted permit. The permits are even more of a pain to get now, and the quality offerings are fewer (& more expensive) than ever.

The things are accurate, amazingly accurate. I still have not figured out how a gun who's barrel floats around like the clapper in a bell when fitted can be so stinkin' accurate. That's the main reason I've kept this thing. It's a very useful pocket plinker and the 5" barrel knocks another inch off the 3" barrel's 3" groups at 25 yards.

I bought a number of Raven .25s and a Jennings J-22. All have been stunningly reliable. I get an occasional jam on the Jennings, but only after about four or more mags of ammo have been put through the gun. It's NEVER jammed in the first three clip fulls, ever, so I'd carry it with no concerns. I also bought an RG single action .22LR chrome plated revolver with plastic grips that had to keep being tightened. It also was very reliable and accurate for the $64 I paid for it.

Now I have a Davis P-32 that is nickle or chrome plated, which I've never shot. It's real purty and I have a box of ammo for it that I may or may not get around to shooting. Looks like it might be a good paperweight at worst, but it appears to be a giant Raven.

In retrospect, this seems like the deal of a lifetime to me. We are talking 1972, now. I had owned a Browning Challenger in .22 cal. I had been shooting it in NRA bullseye when a friend of mine let me try his Smith Model 41. After shooting the 41, I simply had to have one so I went on a search to find a nice used one. I ended up at a local gun shop that had one that was virtually pristine. I asked if they would take in the Challenger on trade and the deal was struck for the Challenger and $29.00 for the Smith. Every time I think about this deal, I still can't believe I got that pistol for that much money. I do, however, regret getting rid of the Challenger. It was a very nice pistol that I could shoot well with.

When I was in school I paid for and my Dad signed for a .22LR revolver made by EAA. If I remember right, it was called the "Bounty Hunter" or something like that. Single action, easy to strip and clean. That's actually the revolver that made me give up on revolvers for good. I had shot many by then and none fit me very well. That one felt better than most and I still couldn't hit beans with it. Got it new for 100 dollars and sold it and a Triple K Leather holster for the same $100 several years later.

Well, I didn't actually BUY it but ... I had made a service call to clean a virus from a computer. Took about 20 minutes to get the computer good to go and another 10 minutes to ensure there were no other problems and the 'puter was up to date with patches.

Told the client that there'd be a 50 dollar service fee. Client says "How 'bout you take this instead" and shows me a virtually unused S&W 19-3. I demurred with an "Oh no, sir, I couldn't possibly take that, its worth far more than the fifty dollar fee." Client says "It ain't worth nuthin' to me, I don't even want it around." So I agreed to accept it in lieu of the service fee.

This was about two years ago and I've only fired a cylinder full of .38 specials thru it since then. Its just too purdy to take it out in the woods and shoot the crap outta it. It stays in the gun drawer and I take it out and fondle it occasionally.

The cheapest - AS IN LEAST EXPENSIVE - that I bought was a Kel-Tec P32 that I kept for all of two months. I know it's very popular, sells very well and even has its own "cult" among gun owners, but IMO it is a very inexpensive, spartan, minimalist-designed and somewhat unreliable handgun. Small, lightweight, easily concealable but not worth the money IMO. I know that many will disagree with me on that.

IMO it seems that folks who get any firearm generally form an opinion pretty quickly.. If the firearm is reliable and accurate for you then you generally praise them forevermore..

On the other hand if you get a lemon, and every manufacturer will produce lemons, some more, some less, you hate them forevermore...

It seems KelTec's are a prime example of that theory.

My personal KelTec P32 and P11 have been excellent.. No trips back to Cocoa, both are accurate and reliable.. Therefore I'm on the KelTec fan bandwagon.. In fact I'm waiting now to buy a PF-9 when I can find one.

I know the first generation P3AT's were problematic, and I think there are lots of anti-KelTec'ers out there whose opinions were indeed formed by the "iffy" early P3AT's. I hear the 2nd gen P3AT's are excellent.

Another thing, I think the smaller, lighter & larger caliber a pistol is the more it is prone to "limpwristing".. I don't mean you were guilty of that, just that some KelTec detractors probably had problems because of that. You can't blame the pistol for a user problem.

I had my NAA Guardian 32 before my KT P32, and it DID have to be sent back to the factory for help.. NAA Customer Service was excellent, and the little (heavy) Guardian hasn't missed a beat since.. I think the NAA Guardian is an excellent little pistol, but truthfully I find myself cc the KelTec because it is so much lighter.

I don't think anyone has a problem with someone offering their personal opinion of the different firearms in general.. I do hate it when someone absolute hates one gun or another and trolls every firearm forum on the net posting their venom.. (KQ & Fowler come to mind).

You didn't do that, and I respect your opinion. I'm the same way about Berettas as the TomCat I had was pure merde, and customer service equally poor..

I know legions of folks love Beretta's and my opinion is simply just one opinion..

You will never know how much I wanted that little P32 to work out well for me. It was a pure delight to pocket and to carry about, especially here in the AZ heat.

My on-going problem with it was that the slide stop spring would slip off of its recess because the plastic body would bulge a bit. Then, the slide would not stay open after the last round was fired. I'm sure you know exactly what I'm referring to. Consequently, I'd dry fire it (a non-no) at least once each mag full at the range if I forgot to keep count of the rounds I had fired.

Well, I went up to the forums, read all the articles and ordered spare pins, springs, etc., used the hair dryer, cut grooves in the pins, and went back and forth with Kel-Tec - they were always very responsive, polite and helpful - over this timeframe. Nothing I did proved to be a permanent fix.

It eventually had to go back and get replaced altogether under warranty. Then, I just traded the brand new replacement in for less than half of what it originally cost me.

So, yes, for me it was not a pleasant experience but as I said earlier, there are more than enough satisfied owners and pundits out there to make my experience more of an exception rather than a rule.

Least expensive would be a Hi-Point C-9, 9mm. Works like a champ. Retail was $139.00, but I traded a 38 revolver I didn't like, and $7.28 cash for the gun, a box of ammo, and the background check and sales tax.

I think the best deal I ever got was a VGC Smith and Wesson 39-2 for $250.00. I had seen a couple that I liked at other dealers, but they wanted $400.00 for them.
